Is my puppy sick?

My 10 day old puppy isn't sucking as long as she use to. Maybe only 15 minutes and everytime she has milk coming out her nose. She has a little conjestion but not all the time, mainly when she nurses. I am concerned she has a cold and afraid of pnuemonia. Can someone offer some advice on what I should do or look for?
Thanks so much!

I am the girl's breeder

The male's breeder has been extremely helpful answering a ton of questions with the backwards feet and the hypoglycema. I don't want to keep bothering her.

This website is a Godsend for me. There are no specialist bulldog vets so they don't have a clue. I get much more useful info from this website.

thanks,
Sheryl

Yes, they were overheated {:<[

Oh Lord help me get through this!! I had a small heater going and borrowed a humidifier so it wasn't so dry in there. It's a small room and my glasses fogged up every time I went in. After 2 hours I turned off the heater and realized it was to hot, they were panting so I cooled the room down and gave them water with the eyedropper, which they took readily.

The bigger one choked on the last drop and I'm afraid it went down the wrong tube. She is already on clavimox. She fed off mom every 3 hours but still only will suck for half the time as the other pup. Her breathing seems to be faster then the other one as well.

Do I need stronger antibiotics if it turned into pneumonia? Should I take her back to the vet, again? Should I be tube feeding her? (she gags, I this option). She is quite plumb so I don't think I need to worry about weight loss.

I thank each and everyone of you who gave advise. I had 2 litters of 6 each with my older bulldog and no problem whatsoever. This has been a nightmare since the c-section and problems with that, now each day is something else to worry about with these pups, and I get so attached.

Thanks again for listening,
Sheryl

Sounds like too many of my litters

First, keep an ear syringe handy and the instant milk come out the nose, suction like mad!

Do they sound juicy, and is their temperature normal? (the new instant read thermometers are priceless).

I also hope you know what the temperature is in the place they're living. If it's too hot they'll scream until they go limp and die.

Puppies from one of my bloodlines would start to cry horribly at about a week and keep it up for the next 2 weeks. The human baby gas remedy helped some. So did baby benedryl. But mostly I held them and rocked them and burped them like a human baby continuously. Raising those litters was 2 weeks of hell, but one of them produced my 1st homebred CH. And they all had the most lovely temperments.

Raising a bulldog litter is not for the faint of heart or the inexperienced. And getting experience is helped a lot if you have a mentor you can call in for help! Is your girl's breeder available?

one bm in 24 hrs is fine, but the puppy might not be eating

enough so the body is holding on to all the food that goes in.

I agree that some of the whining could be gas...

a combination of the Mylecon Gas Drops sold for human infants together with some burping (swirling rubs on their back when held against your chest) may be all that is needed to relieve some tummy aches...and if there's some gas in the belly that can be dispelled, it leaves more room for milk. happy.gif

maybe too hot is why they are crying

I've had puppies go a couple days before with no BM, so that should be ok. The puppies may be crying if they are hot. I lost my Ono last year at 28 days due to pneumonia(he aspirated on day 12) so please be very careful. Saying prayers for your baby dolls.

have they been wormed?

when they eat make sure you burp them, also you might try come infant gas drops after eating. They could be full of air and in pain.

Dont worry to much about the BM, keep feeding them, they need to eat for atleast 20 minutes at a feeding.

Hope they feel better soon.

Still no BM

Thanks Elaine, besides from not having a bm both puppies are on clavamox. I stopped giving the probiotic since there is no diarrea. Both are eating less and crying alot, or whining. Their stomachs appear full or at least rounded, I know they are eating just not as much. I also added a humidifier, it's a small room and very warm. I stopped using the space heater since the humidifier makes it really warm.

They have kept down all the milk and move around alot, I just don't know why there is no bm or why they are whining.

Thanks so much for your help.

Thanks Elaine

I took the puppy to the vet last night. She gave us a rx and a probiotic. I don't like to tube feed. She gags and I feel terrible. I'm letting her eat for small intervals more often, she hasn't had milk come up yet. New problem, she hasn't had a bowel movement since last night....I can't wait to get the 2 week mark behind us.

Yes, your puppy sounds quite sick!

Please take her to the vet first thing in the morning, and don't allow her down on the floor or sniffing any other dogs while her immune system is immature and already struggling.

It does sound like she has inhaled liquid, either while eating or spitting up, and this turns into inhalation pneumonia quicky and requires antibiotics from your vet. Along with these antibiotics you need to ask them to show you how to "tube feed" this youngster so she can get enough nourishment into her and bypass the reflux thru her nose until she is healthy. I would also suggest use of a humidifier in the room where the pup is housed, with the steam pointed upward and not directly onto any of the dogs, but just adding moisture to the room to ease breathing. You will need to keep her warm but not hot...preferably keeping a heating pad on low setting in the whelping box but not direclty under the dog (along one side is good because she can snuggle up to it when needed or crawl away when too warm. In case she has a bacterial pneumonia I would also suggest keeping her away from other pups for 1-2 days, until you get at least 24hrs of medication into her. And of course keep her away from drafts or any chilling air (ie, away from air-conditioning or fan). Ten days old is still so very fragile. Good luck...don't wait to see the vet...you'll lose her.
