He has a normal allergic reaction to something about this time every year, he gets hives and has to stay in the house for a week or two and then hes fine. Tuesday morning he started and by yesturday he had the runs but it was almost all BLOOD!!He wouldnt eat or drink since tuesday either, So we took him to the vet this morning and he has Pancreatitis. The vet said that this can happen if they are bit or stung by certain insects, has anyone heard of this before?? He has never gotten this sick.
I hope he will be o.k, I have never left him anywhere before.
wonderful!!!.........
so happy to hear that he's home! he probably feels much better being home with his mama!
continued prayers he's back to normal soon! kisses to Corbin! (love his name by the way)

A turn in the right direction.
A turn in the right direction.
Corbin is home!!
Corbin was able to come home today. The vet called me first thing this morning and said that he had ripped his IV out last night, and I said "It sounds like hes back to normal!" He has lost alot of weight and has some food to eat for the next few days, today was the first time since monday he has been able to keep food or water down. So he is getting better. About 2 hours ago his hives started to come back but now they are going away again. He has a bit of a cough, but im hoping thats just from throwing up so much.

took awhile with Luigi too.........
we went back & forth everday for 1 - 1 1/2 weeks. also he didn't eat for several days, but was getting fluids from them, so all was okay.
after that initial week, we had to go back several times to draw blood and check all his levels.
it is unbelievable how quick it happens. Luigi was fine, ate his dinner, we went out in the yard, and then all of a sudden he started to vomit. i didn't think much of it, other than an upset belly. by morning he was dripping blood (bladder infection)and more vommitting, and drinking water like he was trying to put a fire out. and thank god he did, cause i got him to the vet quick because of that, then all heck broke loose with the pancreatitis.
that was a saturday, she took some xrays, but they didn't know then exactly what it was, but she started to treat for that. we took him home, he was mainly just sleeping, on monday i went to go pick up his antibiotics, and when i came home, he was sitting in a pool of blood from his rectum.....rushed him in to the vet and full treatment started for pancreatitis.
thanks for the update, still holding you both in my thoughts and prayers.......

Talk to the vet about an hour ago...
She said that his pancreatic enzymes are starting to come back down they were at 6200 and should be about 1000-1500 but he still wont eat. He has stopped vomiting and still has the runs. She said he is still very sick and now cant pin point a day that he will be able to come home. When she checked his blood yesturday she said that the only thing that was somewhat normal was his salt level, everything else was either way up or way down. I just dont get how he could get sooo sick.

thats the only cause I could find too..
Stress or trauma, so the vet is pretty sure it would of been a sting from a black wasp. Very painfull. other than that hes been happy and his life is normal.

I have been looking too,
I cant find it either. He eats wellness dog food and very seldomly gets people food, if he does he gets fruits or veggies. The only people thing he ate this week was a couple strawberries and some lettuce. Im going to try to get out of work early today so I can see him but he is 1 1/2 hours away. The only good bulldog vet around.

Ela1ne i remember our dr. telling us...............
now that i thought all night on it,(it was such a traumatic time for us, i blocked some things out) that any "trauma or stress" may trigger it? can that be possible?? i remember one of her questions was did he knock/bump into anything, fall?
i also remember now, that Luigi had 2 very bad cases of hives.(had to rush him to the vets) one i believe was from using fabreze on the matress, but the 2nd time i never could figure it out as we had stopped all perfumes etc. he also had bad diarrhea with it?? and not long after that 2nd time, he got the pancreatitis.
i think in my Luigi's case it was mainly diet, but she/dr. believes his started from being impacted (his hardwiring, as she called it, isn't working at times. meaning he's not getting the signal that he has to void, (not related to his SB), his stool at times comes out like a baseball, so i need to keep him flowing so to speak. i give him greenbeans with all his meals)
gee, now i'm very curious about this?? will have to do some research myself...

Okay...stress from nasty insect sting...
I feel sorry for the little guy that he has to go thru this, and you likely will need to keep some "fiber" in his diet, as with the green beans, to keep his stools moving. Has your vet mentioned possible use of human preparations for "regularity" ??
Thanks for extending this special effort.
I know you take excellent care of your special-needs babies!

Hello
He is only 4. They said that what ever had stung/bit him caused a large allergic reaction. When I first saw his hives I gave him 2 benadryls as usual but it took awhile and alot of cold compresses for the swelling to go down. The vet did do ultrasounds and checked all of his levels. She couldnt believe that it was from that either she said that its mainly all in overweight dogs and Corbin is probably a little underweight. I just want to find out what got him and try to get rid of them if I can.

It's good you caught it now, it can be very serious. The key
is NOTHING by mouth, no food or water, in order to rest the pancreas, so he does need to be at the vet to get supportive care. How old is he? I've never heard of insect stings causing it. It can be caused by high-fat greasy foods, but often there is no known cause. Did the dr. do an ultrasound of the pancreas? Praying for your baby.

So very sorry to hear this.................
I will pray for him. I know that this is scary for you. If you post on Forum 1, Michele/Hooch has a great deal of information. Please keep us posted.

my Luigi had pancreatitis..........
and was very sick too. blood etc. we were able to take him to the vet everday where he stayed all day, then take him home at night. we did that for 1 - 1 1/2 week.
i have no clue if an insect bite can cause that, i've never heard of that myself.(but i'm not an expert) with my luigi it was probably a few things, mainly diet. (getting unhealthy people food)
he was treated with "fluid therapy". for the first few days food is withheld and only small amounts of water at a time in order to let everything settle down, and stop the vomitting, diarrhea, etc. i also know that he was given i.v fluids, antibiotics, (he also had a raging bladder infection) and liquid pepto.
gradually small amounts of food is introduced. i also was told not to cook at home for 2 weeks so his "juices in his belly" didn't start up from smelling the food.
my boy was very very sick and it can be serious. the best place for your baby is there so they can monitor him and give him what he needs.
i know how hard this is and scary. please know my thoughts are with you. my Luigi came through it all great, thank god, and now is on a very strict diet. (no more people food, especially with fat, grease, etc.) they told me no cheese or peanut butter for him especially.
if you need to talk or vent, you can email me anytime. i know more people will see your post and may be able to help you better. kisses to your baby....

Interesting cause noted...
I don't doubt that he is sick, and pancreatitis is something serous and needs immediate treatment usually requiring changes in the dog's feeding habits, etc. in future.
Sending healing thoughts his way.
I scanned over four sites and nothing was said about insect bites as a possible cause, altho usually its a fatty diet there can be hormone changes, too many GI medications, as well as a predisposition listed as common causes...but this may be something new for us. I hope you intend to go see him at least once a day every day he is there, because "worry" can hinder his recovery (nerves) and he will feel better with your voice and touch there even if its just for a 15-30min visit.
