My lost pup

I am the owner of two bulldogs, brother and sister. They are two years old and have never been apart. Last Thursday, I found my male dead in his bed. The necrospy showed a GDV, and I have been told almost never seen in bulldogs..I am so upset, sad, and continue to cry. My female, has lost her brother and she is not responding to a new rountine, walks, and she is not playful. Of the two, she was the most playful.
I know there is a time of grief, however, should I consider getting another pup for her.

No pup will replace her brother, however, she was used to a playmate, and of course has never been alone. They were never apart...

Thank you for your advice..

You'd be surprised how many vets will tell that bulldogs

are not prone to gastric torsion. Just about all my vets have told me they rarely see it in bulldogs-I of course, am skeptical because I know too many bullie owners who have lost one to it. So sorry for your loss.....

To those who understand no explanation is needed. To those who don't no explanation is possible.

I encourage you to get a new puppy as soon as you can

I am convinced that our bulldogs who cross the bridge do not want us or their siblings to sit around and grieve endlessly, just as we would not want our dogs to grieve themselves to death if we go first. And a new puppy will give both you and your other bulldog a bundle of joy to focus on, which helps tremendously with the grieving process.

I am very sorry to hear that your boy crossed over, but he is now in a very wonderful place, waiting for the day when he will be reunited with you and his sister.

I'm so sorry you lost your boy...

we lost our Oscar to lymphoma and had another boy, Ollie. We got a puppy and it really helped him get over his mourning. I'm sure she's depressed and lonely as are you. So sorry.

By GDV, do you mean bloat? If so, bloat is pretty common in bulldogs unfortunately and many have died from this.

Your girl is grieving and a new addition could help her feel better if and when you decide you are ready for a new addition.

Again, I am very sorry for your loss.

So sorry to hear of your loss.

My sincere condolences. Unfortunately whoever told you that GVD or more-commonly referred to as BLOAT is not that unusual with bulldogs. I've lost one young male with it and had another female with this severe condition that was rescued with emergency surgery. Any barrel-chested dog is suseptible to gastric torsion and that does include our breed. Most owners, having encountered it, were totally unaware of this so do not punish yourself for being unfamiliar with it.

Regarding your lonely female, if you are considering another bulldog as companion for her, I have a few experienced suggestions: get a quiet-natured male, whether younger, older or similar age, but one that is still healthy enough for some playtime romping. Most females are the "alpha" dog in a multi-dog household and getting a dog of opposite sex will lead to greater acceptance...it doesn't matter if one or both dogs are neutered or spayed. If you want a young adult dog, please consider adopting a rescue dog, one that has lived with another dog previously, harmoniously.
