After my dog lays down to relax, when he stands back up his head shakes badly. Almost palsey\seizure like. Only his head though. I took him to the vet, and the vet is having a tough time diagnosing what is wrong. Its almost like an uncontrollable head shake from side to side, and his jowls shake and everything. Once he gets excited, it stops, sometimes it will continue for 5 to 10 minutes. Also, he isn't turning in circles like he is dizzy, so I guess vertigo is out of the question. Has anyone else experienced this with their canine?

Take the reference material to your vet...see if you can get
the last appointment of the day so you won't feel rushed, keeping people waiting, and talk about these tremors. Also read up about Potassium Bromide and its use with seizures/tremors. It is most often used as a booster together with phenobarbitol given to epileptic animals, but it can also be used alone (its non-narcotic) to help with head tremors...some docs don't know this. I have a female that began having these head tremors at about age two, and I discussed it at length with my then-vet who was a very clever young man, did lots of checking on the internet and with UC Davis Vet School about these idiomatic tremors, and decided we should try Dale on the Potassium Bromide (aka KBr). There is a "loading dose" of higher quantity for about ten days, then a low dose of liquid squirted into the dog's mouth on into its food (I give hers directly into her mouth, she's become accustomed to the taste and I pop a treat in directly after, also). Dale will be ten years old in March 2007, and she seldom gets a tremor anymore but I still give the medication. It only requires an annual blood test to verify that her potassium blood level remains withing normal range. I have suggested this to others over the years, to try the KBr orally to reduce/eliminate the tremors, but not all vets agree or know about this treatment. It costs me about $40/pint and it lasts me about 2-3 months, so the cost is minimal. If your vet doesn't stock this, he can write a Rx and the pharmacy can mix it to the strength desired. You can also email me directly if you want to discuss it more...click on my name above. Best wishes.
Thank You Ela1ne and Rhiann!
My wife and I have been so scared today. Our vet has talked about seizures, and something regarding swelling in the brain stem (i forgot the name of of the infection). I read the link, and this is EXACTLY what my bully is experiencing. EXACTLY! To the tee. I can break him out of the head tremors by offering him a treat, or picking up one of his toys with him watching me do so. He is completely coherent during these episodes. He has had about 10 of them today, it happens almost every time he lays down to sleep, his head will start shaking from side to side.

Where do I go from here? Its killing me to watch him go through this. He can't get any sleep, as every time he lays his head down to sleep it starts, so he lifts his head up, and the shaking continues.
here is a link...sounds like head tremors
http://www.bulldogsworld.com/headtremor.html
also type in the search box head trmors or head shakes and tons of previous posts will pull up that should help you..
sorry to hear you are going through this....I can only lead you in this direction as I have had no real experience in this..only once when one of the dogs reached a toxic level of Ivermectin..
if that is the case..stop dose for three days and it gets better...then discuss w/ vet a lower dose or alternatives..
