Missing Genitals at birth? Boy or Girl?

my 10 day old puppy at first appeared to be a male. He had a red vein from where the females parts are and ended about where a males part would be. I didn't notice until I took him to a different vet at 2 days old. She was shocked to see no definate parts. She thought he was a she because at the base was a little opening where urine came out. There was also a little hole at the top above the vein as well.

She told me it was a birth defect, we wouldn't know for some time whether there where other defects, maybe some of both parts. Also I should have her fixed.

Since then the mother is contantly licking that area hard and it bleeds, not to bad, only slightly after she licks it. Now a little bulb has appeared at the top of the vein and voila...urine squirts out.

I think it's a male who was undeveloped...does anyone know about this?

Thanks!!

and a few more pics for ya post op

this was pretty extreme post op swelling, and bruising. The hematoma came on fairly fast and i tried myself to releive it with compresses or heat and cold as told but didnt work- so then we had to do the wraps daily

no a specialist is not needed

if you have a vet who is comfortable doing the surgery. My vet had only done 2 prior to this in his lifetime and that was enough practice for me to have faith in him! LOL! Plus is was a great experience to have shared with other vets at the clinic who were new. He was sort of a show case while there for surgery for all to learn from.

It is rare so you may have a hard time finding vets who are comfortable doing it but once they see what is going on internally then it helps them have a better understandning of the type of surgery needed.
And FYI- it may be multiple surgeries in some cases

And yes- do not let mom lick the area- VERY PRONE to INFECTION and INJURY!

these dogs frequent Urinary tract infections so be prepared as it gets older.
And just so ya know..
surgery ranged from 500-1000. I dont actually remeber the exact amount becasue we had post op complication with hematomsa and dehisence, then blood loss complications, etc etc...in the end i found out he had a clotting disorder as well. so that complicated things ..
Best of luck. PLEASE KEEP IN TOUCH!

Thank You!! I have been to 2 vets and neither have seen this bef

I took the pup to the vet last night because of a respitory infection. The vet was surprised the penis appeared but behind the penis is open, there doesn't seem to be foreskin over the penis and urine is now coming out the bottom. Vet says not to let the mom lick there and to wait till he's old enough for surgery if necessary.

Thank you so much for your number, I may have to call you for advice. One question would be, is there a specialist for the type of surgery needed?

Sounds like possibly a hermi

these guys are born with both male and female parts- some usually underdeveloped.

here are pics of a 6 month old pup who had both. this is a pic of what they call psuedo pensis...not fully developed and functional and VERY EASILY injured. So be careful if the pup developes one of these.

this dog alo had an opening near the anus that was a ureathal opening where it could also urinate. Very little urine came from the penis.

Ultrasounds will need to be performed as well as xrays with dye studes to see exactly how functional each part is and where urine is being diverted to. If urine is diverted to two seperate areas they will decide which one is most functional and correct this with a cosmetic type surgery.
In this dogs case- we removed the pseudo penis, testicles and kept the most functional opening near the anus for urination. During surgery they also discovered two little ovaries.
Most of these dogs do not have sexually functioning organs. But they still should be altered just to be safe.

I hope this helps. You are more than welcome to email me or give me a call

I can also have our vet discuss anything with your vet.

Do you keep the pup in with his mama all the time?

The constant licking of the genetalia and the resulting drops of blood at the urine exit could be a mild urethral prolapse which if it continues to swell, could block off the exit for the urine and cause the pup to die so I would definitely restrict mama-dog from licking this area. If you need to gently stimulate the pup to get him to pee before feeding, use a warm wet cotton ball gently wiped in one direction only.

It could have both male and female genitalia,

It is not unheard of for a dog to be a hermaphradite (sp). I think someone on this board has posted about their dog having both parts before, you can use the search button to check.

you have to let the puppy grow out

either way sounds like the pup needs to be fixed. I have heard of a few, but not seen them in person.

keep the puppy seperated from mom except during feedings.
