Maybull's Paw: Photo

As you can see, Maybull's back paw pad on her left rear paw is very red and swollen. I thought that a photo of it might help people understand what I've been trying to explain. You can see how much more swollen is than the normal, right rear paw.

Any ideas, anyone. We looked and there's no thorn or burr there and w've been giving her Benadryl for several days.

Yikes!

You weren't kidding, were you.  I have no idea what that might be...

wilson has idc.....

and his pads will get like that......i soak and soak in epsom salt...and some times it will break open .....i refuse to put wilson under due to health reason.....but your vet should culture that and get him onto anitbotics right away .....also look to see if any of the pad hairs could of ingrown into the pad....thats wilson problem hairy feet...but that is a good picture of idc.....

if you want i can post a picture of wilson pads....

That's what I was going to suggest

Epsom salt.  It sure can't hurt...

The vet said it wasn't an IDC

But I hadn't thought of ingrown hair. She had a round of steriods for an IDC on her front paw and that's much better.

The vet said soak in Dreft instead of clorox or epson salt. I supect they all do the same thing. If it doens't get better in a few days, II'll talk to the vet about taking a culture. As I said, it doesn't seem to cause her any discomfort, but it looks very nasty.

dont use pred.....

that does not help idc and what your dog has is idc...some times they break open drain sometimes they dont and they  swell like that....putting your dog on pres for idc is like throwing water on a electrical fire...you can get worse problems...pred lowers the body ability to  fight infection....i get so angry when vets do that......you need a culture for the right antibotic...NOT pred ...... prep h has steroids and thats why the swelling will reduce...

soak his feet make sure their dry and powder with medicated gold bond...keep the bottom of feet as dry as possible....becasue of the swelling you have a chance of getting yeast problems in this weather.....

dont use pred...its not a cure all...

Stephanie and David's picture

Thanks. The swelling is dry,

Thanks. The swelling is dry, not wet. The steriods were for another problem but she was also on anti-biotics at the same time and that didn't help. Do you think that Prep H would be bad or good?

The weather has been cool here (highs in the 40s) and mostly dry but we've had rain the last couple of days.

judy wilson's picture

i only use prep h....

for 30 min before i use to show him to bring down the swelling....long term use is the same as using pred...so once in a while is ok not every day and not more than once a day.....

the pred and or antibotics is what more than likely started your problem....wilson got aspirated pneumonia and was on antibotics for 3 months....this is what started all my feet problems and becasue they swell so much..i have to watch and keep them dry.....but its the hair on the bottom of his feet between the toes...their almost ingrown.....i wont put him under due to other medical issues...but this is the best way to flush them anf culture them for the right antbotics.....if your vet says oh dont culture....tell them to do it.....some bacteria need air to grow and some do not....you have to have the right antibotic to go after this....

i also find 100mg of vit c and one cod liver oil tab has helped....reduce out breaks...(their worse during the summer...than the winter)....

probotics are good also,,,,,no dairy food....

here is a picutre of wilson idc pad....

sites/default/files/bh.JPGnow his are caused becasue the hair will become ingrown to his foot.....all i can do is soak it...some times i will use prep h to bring down the swelling...but your vet can lance it...culture it and get the right antibotics going...but be warned they keep coming back.....

Someone told me to use Preperation H

It's used for hemroids.  Did the trick but Rock's paw wasn't as swollen as Maybull"s paw.

Hope she feels better soon.

Ouch!

I would soak it in Epsom Salts for about 20 minutes 2x a day. Maybe try some antibiotics from your vet. Looks like it could be an internal issue. Also, check for any type of marks...bites etc, in between the pads. Maybe from an ingrown hair?

Best of luck. Poor Maybull:-( Sophie sends her some slobbery smooches to help her feel better:-)

Any chance she has a foxtail in there?

Sometimes the hole where they go in is so tiny you can't even see it.

Stephanie and David's picture

I don't think so...

I felt around and the vet felt around. I don't know where she's find a foxtail, but what should I be looking for?

thanks!

Kathy Chester Newman and Jessa's picture

foxtails have really pointy sharp ends and...

they can work their way into paws or pads if they step on them.  They grow like weeds around here.  Ollie likes to try to eat them when he sees them, yuk.  You would have to look carefully for a small puncture where it went in.  You may not have them where you live, but they're all over around here.

Stephanie and David's picture

I know we have foxtails, but

I'm not sure where Maybull would have walked on some. She's a sidewalk dog. What do the puncture wounds look like with foxtails.

Kathy Chester Newman and Jessa's picture

They look like little round punctures...

the sharp part works its way into the skin and the rest of it follows so by the time you notice swelling, it's all the way inside and you can hardly see where it went in.  Just a thought, it is something that can cause swelling.  If she walks on the sidewalk, it would probably be hard for her to get one in her foot.  Whenever it's windy here in the spring, they seem to blow all over the street and sidewalks.

How does it look from the front?

Do any of her toes look swollen, or is it just the paw pad? Are any of the toenails split?

You might consider getting an x-ray of the paw to rule out anything serious, like a nail bed tumor.

Stephanie and David's picture

It's just the pad.

Actually, it's just part of the pad. A little bit of the pad looks OK. We're taking her to the vet this afternoon.
