Leptosporosis

My boy just got over a bout of Leptosporosis.   He was on antibiotics for 30 days.  We just came back from the vet

and all his blood work and ultrasounds came back normal.  Thank God he does not have any lasting kidney or liver damage.

It was a very scary illness and the vet said he is "one lucky dog:

Just want to urge all of you to get the Lepto vaccine.  In my area it was not a core vaccine but this past few months

there has been an outbreak of it.  It is now required.

Please vaccinate.  It is a terrible disease and I dont wish it on any dog.

Glad your boy is OK!

Lepto is one scary disease to deal with and your Vet is right, you have a very lucky dog.

I know lots of people don't give a Lepto vaccine, but I do because of the area we live in - farms, wild critters, ponds, drainage ditches and a rainy Spring leaves standing water and sometimes causes flooding - all contributing factors to the spread of Lepto.

We get it every year

There have been many cases here in Montreal.

Glad to hear your boy is OK.  Wow.

you must way the risks....

sites/default/files/au.JPGsites/default/files/ai.JPGthis vaccine has caused several bulldog death right here on this forum......dogs appear to have an extremely high allergic reaction to this vaccine....

since i am in southwick./westfield mass area....their have been 5 cases in 10 years....i do not vaccinate....and since this is a very low rate i would not recommend it.....

i feel if you do vaccines...look at your area  first....what is happening....

and so you know i live on a pond....house is within 100ft.....only 4 houses on my street...we have mice we have rats....racoons...deer...and we have a nightly bear at the moment....i do have feral cats that i  provide housing (old crates) and clean fresh water for....they in turn keep my mice and critters to a min...

Thanks for the input. I asked about the vaccine reaction

and he acknowledged that is does happen.  He administers benedryl injections along with the lepto vaccine.  He

has not had any adverse reactions in his practice.  I have chosen to vaccinate both my dogs because I feel that the

ddisease is far worse than any potential side effects.

you did the right thing for your.....

boy...as i  say everyone must do what they feel is right for their dog.....i might suggest to do titers the next time to see if he needs another shot....and to be honest...my vet feels its not the vaccine but what they grow the vaccine in....some use egg some use beef and some use pig to grow the cultures in,,,and this according to my vet where the problems come in....for allergic reactions

very glad your boy did ok.....

So your dog got lepto even though he was vaccinated?

Lepto is so rare here my vet doesn't even offer the vacccine, you would have to specifically ask for it.
