Someone had sent it to me, right after we lost our Rocky. I thought it was beautiful and truly expressed the love we have for our special friends. To us they will never be "Just a Dog". I am glad you also loved it!

was pretty awful! If it is Cushings and calcinosis not only does it itch tremendously but it becomes infected quite easily. Our vet at first had us shampooing twice a week with Malaseb shampoo with specific instruction to make sure we left it on a full 10 minutes before rinsing and that did seem to help some. Coincidentally, during that time the Phizer canine dermatologist from California was coming to our vets clinic in Michigan. They ask us to bring Rocky for her to evaluate. She did have us try something different. I am sure I still have the bottle and tomorrow I will dig it out and e-mail you directly with more info.

Are you the parents of Rocky that shared a poem about "Not Just a Dog". I have shared that with everyone I know. In was beautiful and the words are so true. Our pups become our family and for so many of us, they are all we have...

Our Cooper is going through the same thing....we think anyway. He was treated for a staph infection last year, but after reading your post and knowing he has been on prednisone for years, you got us wondering if it's cushings... Our question is this- How did you get the itching to stop once you took him off prednisone....We have tried everything.

extended daily use of prednisone. We were not aware of it until he developed calcinosis cutis ( symptom of Cushings) which was horrible incredibly itchy skin lesions that eventually covered a great deal of his body. For him, stopping prednisone also stopped Cushings symptoms, but it was months before his skin healed and there were places that stayed "calcified" and never grew hair.

This was also my experience
Spotty developed Cushing's symptoms and calcinosis cutis after being on prednisone for many months after cancer surgery.

The calcinosis is a very uncommon side effect....I'm sorry that Rocky had to deal with it. It is very hard on the dog.

Our Rocky had Cushings. His was caused by
extended daily use of prednisone. We were not aware of it until he developed calcinosis cutis ( symptom of Cushings) which was horrible incredibly itchy skin lesions that eventually covered a great deal of his body. A new drug has just been approved by the FDA
To treat Cushing's in dogs. Go to www.fda.gov and search for Cushing's.

Cushing's is caused by a tumor on the adrenal gland or the pituitary gland.
Symptoms of Cushing's also can appear if a dog has been taking steroids (oral or topical, or a combination) for a while.
This form is called "iatrogenic" Cushings--there is no tumor, and the symptoms go away after the steroids are tapered and stopped.
