Kennel Cough

We recently to our bully--Bubba to a kennel (he has all of his vaccinations including his Bordetella) for a few days, and when we returned he had a terrible retching cough as if something was lodged in his throat. When he coughed he would cough up mucus--white and foamy. I called the kennel and they had two dogs there during the same time that ended up having kennel cough--they also had their shots.

I have taken him to the vet and was told that his lungs were clear, and that he probably has the start of kennel cough. He is currently taking and antibiotic (doxycycline) and a cough suppresent (similar to Robatussin D--in a pill form). He had his first dose last night at dinner--ate all of his dinner and drank water. Then at 5am this morning, he woke up, did both duties outside, starting coughing-coughing up mucus again. He did this about 4-5 times. Then he started to have labored breathing--which when he would breathe in his body would tighten and then start to spasm a little bit--almost like he was shaking. I have contacted our vet again, and we are monitoring him. He has not eaten or drank anything yet today--he wants nothing to do with anything I have tried. The vet wants me to keep monitoring him and I will be calling them again shortly with an update.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do? I am feeling so helpless, and am very concerned--the shaking, the not eating or drinking thing are really scary.

Concerned bully mom,
Sara

Re: go to the shower....

Thanks that is helpful information. I will try that with him tonight. He is actually back at the vet for observation and to get some chest x-rays done. His breathing is very labored.

go to the shower....

get some steam going to help with that mucus....give him some good pats on the side,,,,warm up some chichen broth low sodium this will get his taste buds going....just try to help get the mucous loose for him....
takes three days to get rid of....their throats get a little sore....thats why you keep those fluids going....also a little honey to sooth his throat...and give him energy....
