Hey guys, anyone have experience with kennel cough??? Winnie has had a runny nose, sneezing and over the last 2 days started coughing. She has been vaccinated for kennel cough, but I read that dogs can get a mild form even after vaccination. She is still active, eating, drinking, and going to the bathroom regularly. No fever. I read online that its usually a virus and runs its course in a couple days without treatment. Would you guys take her to the vet? wait it out? is there anything I can give her to make her feel better???
Any advice is appreciated!
Thanks,
Emily
Thanks for the info, im going to try that!!

No need to go to the vet...yet
If the runny nose turns thick and yellow/green then she'd need to go.
My vet says it's fine to give regular Robitussen cough syrup. 1 teaspoon every 8 hours.
Good luck,
Sue

There is so much going on out in the environment too. You can giver her a benedryl and see if that helps too. I am in North Carolina, and things are starting to bloom, we already have pollen everywhere!

Vet?
Does she have atemp? Is the runny nose clear mucous? All of mine (8) had an upper respiratory infection, lasted about two weeks, going between all of them. One of my dogs was on doxy, prior to this stuff coming into the house, she never got any symptoms, but everyone else was reverse sneezing, coughin, etc. Appetites were fine, energy level fine. One one of my dogs noses, turned into the green junk, got him on antibiotics, clavimox, for about a weeks time, he is fine now. So, if no temp, clear mucous, just let it ride....

Deuce is just getting over kennel cough....
He would wake up in the middle of the night and it would sound like he was trying to cough something up but nothing ever came up. This became more and more frequent. So on the second day, he started coughing up white foamy phlegm just a few times. So I thought it was time to get to the vet. I told them of his symptoms, he only had the coughing. They gave him some antibiotics and now a week later he is fine. He never had any runny nose, appetite was fine, energy level was fine, no fever, he would just cough. I learned that we did not get the bordatella vaccine (don't know why), but that does NOT prevent your dog from getting kennel cough. It is kind of like the flu vaccine, you may still catch some strain of flu that the vaccine doesn't cover. So it does not guarantee that your dog will not get kennel cough. We will be getting the vaccine but now I am aware it doesn't always prevent kennel cough. So, I would say if the coughing gets worse, take her in. Let me know if you have any other questions since we just went through this.
