kennel cough

Hi, I've been taking my dog to the dog park, and now he has the symptoms of kennel cough. He has sort of a hacking cough, usually only one or 2 and then once in a while he wretches like he is trying to bring something up. Other than that he is eating and drinking and seems cheerful. I did some research online, and most seem to say that usually a dog will recover within 2 or 3 weeks without an intervention. Obviously, if he worsened or seemed to be in any kind of distress I would take him to the vet. Just wondering what other Bully owners have experienced, do you feel its ok, just to let it run its course, or should he go to the vet? By the way he is 15 months old and otherwise healthy.

In general terms, yes, lets see if he can overcome it himself.

Obviously you want to watch for lethargy which can indicate fluid collecting in the lungs, elevated fever (canine normal 101-103 with rectal thermometer), loss of appetite, and increased coughing especially if it causes vomiting. If you have a baby humidifier/vaporizer and can run that at night in the same room as the dog (not pointing directly at him, but elevated)the extra moisture often helps dog loosen congestion, easing coughing somewhat. A clear nasal discharge is of minimal concern...a thick yellow or greenish one means a trip to the vet for antibiotics.

Thanks for the reply.............

Thanks for the reply Elaine. I guess I just wanted a little feedback that I was doing the right thing. So far, so good. He's just acting liking he has a very mild cold or something, but I'll watch him closely.
