June 17 surgical implant ... now this....

Emma was surgically implanted on June 17th and AI on June 19th. Yesturday I noticed a huge lump under Emma's incision. I was concerned that it was infection or hernia so I took her in to vet this morning. Emma went crazy when I told her we were going for a ride... she starts running around 100 miles an hour jumps on/off couch etc. When we were walking into vets office I noticed a dark purple looking string of bloody mucus hanging from her. I didn't go to the vet because of this, but boy i was glad i was there. Neither vet is concerned about lump under incision, however they do think she is pregnant and now aborting her puppies. sad.gif They are concerned about Pyrometra and have her on 2 weeks of clavamox. There was no smell to the discharge. I asked them to do an ultra sound and they said at this point it wouldn't tell them anything. They said to watch her close for fever, lethargy etc and bring her back in one week.

Has anyone experienced this? If she is aborting, will she continue to have discarge? At this point she is happy, playing with Cooper (our new 5 month old bullie)and no more discharge.

I will be bummed if I lose the puppies, but my main concern is Emma... I don't want anything to happen to her!!!!

I am east of Wayne about 20 miles in NE Nebraska.

It's great to know another bullie owner around here! Don't know about the clavamox. Speaking from experience I still would have her white count done and maybe an ultrasound to see how large the uterus is. Good luck at the vet and keep us posted on her progress.

thanks!!!

Thank you so much for the info on vets in Columbus. I am originally from Clarkson and now live in Grand Island, Columbus is between GI & Clarkson, I am going to schedule appointment. Thanks again!

Where are you in nebraska?

Emma is on Clavamox and seems to be doing fine, she is eating, drinking, busy playing with puppy and has no more discharge since the one time at the vet. I have been taking temp occaisionally and her temp is normal. Will Clavamox work on pyro if caught soon enough?

thanks!!!

I am in Nebraska, too. There are

two vets who know about Bulldogs of that I know. One is in Columbus and the other is in Wayne. I go to Dr.s Lori and Mark Zink. They are very knowledgable about the Bulldog breed and I trust them implicitly. They are former breeders and showers themselves. There is a gal vet in Columbus who works with a Bulldog breeder there, and she is good too, though I have not experienced her personally, but know the lady who uses her and she has nothing but compliments about her bulldog knowledge.

As to the discharge.. have a vet check her white count right away. Pyometra is a silent and dangerous killer as dogs don't always exhibit any outward symptoms until it is too late. The infection is in the uterus and can make the dog septic from the "inside out" and you won't know it until the dog collapses from massive organ failure. White count is the way to go and if it is elevated take action quickly.

Thank you! Thank you!
Where is this listed on BDW homepage?? I looked again and don't see it... point me to it.
Thanks again... Ravenna and Columbus are within 50 miles! I have traveled all the way to Kansas with a ****zu years ago because vet here would not treat heart condition and wanted to put to sleep. sad.gif ...so 50 miles is wonderful!

I am so grateful for bulldogsworld.com! My friends can only listen to me talk about/worry about my bullies for so long, they don't understand how important all this is... thank goodness for all of you!

i have called many vets

and asked if they specialize in bulldogs... most reply back; "we take all dogs" None of the vets around here want to be honest and say they don't know what their doing... they act like all dogs anatomy are the same and treatment is the same. Is there a place to look online for specialized vets? I am in Nebraska.

Aside from the issue of getting a new vet, I really wanted to know if anyone experienced this and the outcome.

I appreciate bulldogsworld.com so much!!!! [linked image]

Time...

to find yourself a reputable bulldog vet. Where are you located? If you are going to breed...it is a NECESSARY thing to have a vet that is familiar with the breed. While it may be a little to early, I don't know your ovulation dates or progesterone numbers...an u/s shouldn't be that far away. Is that why they want you to bring her back in a week?

Re: June 17 surgical implant ... now this....

Did your vet look at the discharge under a microscope, and say anything about a large number of white cell count?
