Rocky is a 7 year old English bulldog. I am his Grandmother and taking care of him for a few months. He is a a real jewel and happy all the time. He has the interdigital cysts on all four paws, two to three on each. I've tried the bleach soak; changed food; took him to Vet. He is currently on Baytril, and a spray (that he hates me to do). The Vet diagnosed it as "Staphylococcus" (Staph infection)and mentioned it takes a long time to get rid this. But in the meantime, I'm not seeing a whole lot of improvement. The bleach soak seems to help on one day but then the next day there is no improvement. He also has allergies but do not know to what. We live in "pollen/allergy" area. He did not live here before. Maybe I should try Benedryl?
He has had a lot of changes in his life of late, could the stress cause all this? I'm at my wits end here. The paws bleed, ooze, and look really bad...plus, pads swell. Would appreciate any suggestions and advice.
Loving this Bulldog!!
Not Really-- There is Benzoyl Peroxide, Carbamide Peroxide....
3% Hydrogen Peroxide is what you meant. I knew that, but others may not. I'm sure you would want anyone reading your post to know exactly which Peroxide you mean. Benzoyl Peroxide is used in acne treating meds. Carbamide Peroxide is used in teeth bleacing products.
Even Hydrogen Peroxide comes in different grades.
I googled it and here's more than you ever wanted to know about it---
3% Hydrogen Peroxide (Drug/Grocery Store Variety)
Used as antimicrobial agent for treating wounds and sanitizing agent
[Made from 50% Super D Peroxide, Diluted. Contains stabilizers - phenol, acetanilide, sodium stanate, tetrasodium phosphate among them.]
[This peroxide contains known chemicals do not ingest!]
6% Hydrogen Peroxide (this is the one I always think of whenever anyone says Peroxide)
Used by Beauticians for Coloring Hair. Used as sanitizing agent.
Comes in strengths labeled 10,20,40 volume. Must have activator added to be used as a bleach.
[Contains stabilizers, additives, and impurities dependent on manufacturing and dilution process. Do not ingest.]
30% Re-Agent Hydrogen Peroxide
Used in medical research.
[Contains stabilizers, additives, and impurities dependent on manufacturing and dilution process. Do not ingest.]
30-32% Electronic Grade Hydrogen Peroxide
Used for washing transistors and integrated chip parts before assembly.
[Contains stabilizers, additives, and impurities dependent on manufacturing and dilution process. Do not ingest.]
35% Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide (Also 50% Food Grade H2O2)
Used in food products like cheese, eggs, whey products. Also used to spray inside of foil lined containers for food storage - known as the aseptic packaging system. Used for the disinfection of potable water. Also used (diluted) to disinfect, kill bacteria, sanitize wounds and introduce oxygen into the body. Eg. bathing, gargle, toothpaste, treat drinking water, etc.
[Contains stabilizers, additives, and impurities dependent on manufacturing and dilution process.
--e.g. This Food Grade Hyrogen Peroxide is Stabilized using tin based formulations ]
35% Technical Grade Hydrogen Peroxide (Click to Order Now)
Used for waste water treatment and the disinfection of potable water, cosmetics, and laundry applications. Also used (diluted) to disinfect, kill bacteria, sanitize wounds and introduce oxygen into the body. Eg. bathing, gargle, toothpaste, treat drinking water, etc.
[May contain a small amount of phosphorus to neutralize any chlorine in the water it is combined with.]
MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET & Technical Details: Hydrogen Peroxide (20 to 40%)
35% Standard Grade Hydrogen Peroxide (Also 50%, 60%, 70% Standard Grades)
Used mainly for bleaching in the pulp and paper industry and in the textile industry; oxidation reactions in the chemical industry; environmental processes (detoxification and deodorization). Used for Waste water treatment.
[Contains stabilizers, additives, and impurities Do not ingest.]
90% Hydrogen Peroxide
Used by the military as a source of Oxygen at Cape Canaveral. Used as a propulsion source in rocket fuel.
99.6% Hydrogen Peroxide
This was first made in 1954 as an experiment to see how pure a hydrogen peroxide could be manufactured.
If it is a staph infection, it can take quite a while to clear u
the staphylococci organism is commonly present on skin, but I think some people (& dogs) are more susceptible to problems from it. My bully has only had 1 IDC in 8 yrs. Keep soaking; it should clear up eventually. Also, I'm kind of leary about long-term antiobiotic therapy because it can lead to drug resistant organisms.
Peroxide/hydrogen peroxide...same thing.. nm

I think you mean hydrogen peroxide, right?
good description of the black hair clumps.
Thanks, but no...
Julia
I am anxious to go attack those hairs!
Darby gets cysts about once a month or so. They always clear up within a few days. I put Lotrimin cream on them and that seems to help. but i am going to look for those pesky spike hair things and blackheads now!
i am a little sick....i enjoy plucking & popping, so this will actually be fun maintenance.
Cipro
Cipro is very common antibiotic and is used for a multitude of illnesses with very little side effects. Ask your vet. She was on it for 3 months. She's all cleaned up now and her paws are in great shape. Good luck!
Julia did a good job describing about hairs clogging
up the pores..it's almost like there are 5 to 10 hairs that are dark colored that are growing out of 1 pore between their toes..Pulling these hairs out is so easy and they don't even feel it. It is hard to describe but if you look carefully in between the toes you'll see it. My dog just has them between the middle toes and not the outside toes which I find strange..so be sure to check between ALL the toes and if you have to use a magnifying glass..Also, you might find that he has black heads between his toes and those need to be squeezed and put peroxide on them after getting all the junk out of the pores..Pull the hairs on the ones that have dark hair clumps growing out of 1 pore and the black pours (black heads) squeeze out the junk and flush or dab with peroxide..
Ciprofloxacin... an antibiotic. I'm glad your bully is doing wel
Cipro is Ciprofloxacin... an antibiotic. I tend to associate it with all the anthrax stuff that went on a few years ago, and people were being treated left and right with Cipro. Here in CT, we had quite a few scares so it was always big news... and Cipro had some nasty side effects.
Your bullie's cysts were that bad? Poor baby! I'm glad she's better. Is she off of it now that the cysts are gone?
Julia
what is cipro?
Thank you for responding to message about Rocky's cysts. I'm interested in anything!!
What is cipro? antibotic or what?
let me please.
thanks!
Cipro
Our vet prescribes Cipro, and our bully has done really well on it. It's taken her 3 months now, but they're completely gone and dried up.
I wasn't the one who suggested it, but I don't think they meant
It's the "pore" like things that get clogged. It's like just scooping out a big pore on the underside of the pads. It doesn't hurt Grover when we do it... he actually loves it. LOL. It's itchy, and relieving, and he feels better!
They're like little black spikes that LOOK like hairs when you get them out, but they're just whatever was clogging the gland or pore or whatever it was down there... tough to explain.

It's most important that it works, so however you go about doing it...
But Grover never gets cysts. So it works for us!
Kind of like a Biore Pore Strip commercial... the forest of grossness that comes off on the strip? LOL.
Julia
I agree on the Epsom Salt Bath..
Someone told me the other day if you pull the clumps of black hair out under their feet the will stop getting them altogether, and this is the root cause of the problem. I personally can't get myself to pull them, because I think no matter what anyone says THAT WOULD HURT!!!
Poor baby, soak his paws in epsom salt every day for the next week (putting them in the bathtub is easiest) and after the first two soaks it should be dramatically improved.
Cysts
Try soaking him in an epsom salt bath (his feet only) but make sure he doesn't drink it otherwise he'll get the runs. Our male gets them all the time. We give him an epsom salt bath every other day and it tends to keep the swelling down. Good luck!
Poor bullie
No advice here, thank you for taking such good care of this baby. Good advice will come soon, there are experts here who will lead you in the right direction- good luck!
