Anyone ever have a dog with a stubborn case of this? We are at our witts end. My girl just turned 4 two weeks ago and she has been sick for 6 weeks.
Right now she is on 60 mg Prednisone twice daily, 50 mg Azathioprine once a day and 300 mg Cyclosporine twice daily. Has been on this combo for over two weeks now.
Her white count is high..but not really worried about that at this time. It's her red count that is giving us the fits. It's now at 3.7. Was 3.8 last week and 3.9 the week before. She's dying if we don't find the right combo soon.
This disease came upon her suddenly. She was at the vet's for 10 days. Nearly died the second day. Had to have two blood transfusions.
My vet will be consulting with a specialist again but I'm not very hopeful. His last suggestion..what she is taking now..didn't help.
my only thought is to consult with a veterinary oncologist
There are chemotherapy drugs that may be useful...if not used on dogs much there may be a question of proper dosages to be effective, but that would be my only other suggestion.

Would giving her iron help?
I'm assuming this isn't just ordinary anemia but have you tried giving her iron pills? I'm sorry she isn't getting better. I know this must be hard for you and I wish I could help.

I'm in NW Indiana...
so not too far from your vet.
Cyclosporine is one of the recommended drugs used to treat this..especially for stubborn cases. It is quite expensive and she is taking 6 capsules a day.

Re: Cati
My vet has seen two other cases this year and they both responded well by just using Prednisone alone. Pasta has been on Prednisone since day one and it isn't doing its job on her. My luck. :<(

I wish...
it was that easy to fix. When a dog has this disease it's immune system thinks that the red blood cells are foreign because there are antigens attached to their membranes so the body attacks and kills off the red cells.

Hi Cati one more thing I am not sure where you live but I live in Chicago I was thinking since my vet helped my dog even if you are not Chicago mayby you could have your vet fax over her results and you could actually do a phone consulation with my vet and he could get the right combination. If I am not mistaken Cyclosporin I know that is spelled wrong but this drug is not to be used... Why is your vet giving that to her...

Cati please don't give up home on your baby. My one boy developed that right after I got his shots it came on suddenly and next thing I knew we were fighting for his life. That was when he was 2 he lived to be 8 years old. In the beginning the most important thing is to get the red count under control and not have the anitbodies keeping eating them away. The way to do this is to keep them on the predisone which suppress the immune system to keep that in control. I had to keep Tank at a high does orally and injectible and slowly ween him down it took about a month he had to get his blood pcv checked at first every day and than every few days to once a week and than once a month. This is a very serious condition but if can be treated. Please email me and I will go into great detail if you would like... Hang in there things can be turned around......I had my boy for 6 years after his diagnose and that is not even what he passed away from.... I will keep your baby in my prayers please email me......

Re: my only thought is to consult with a veterinary oncologist
The person that my vet is consulting with is an internal medicine specialist. Believe he said he teaches at a college.
