I wrote last week about Tank's patchy coat and some of y'all said it could be early signs of seasonal flank alopecia. We began giving him 3mg tablets of Melatonin, but yesterday I noticed that the skin on his tummy (lower tummy, by his penis) has gotten MUCH DARKER. I don't know if it is normal for an 11 month old puppy's skin to darken, but the speed in which it happened and the coincidence that it was at the same time of the thinning coat worries me....any ideas for Mr. Tank? Also, how long do you keep the pup on Melatonin for?
Thanks all...
My Cocker has something like this....
her whole belly turned black years ago and it turned out to be a yeast infection totally out of control. Now whenever she has grains for an extended period, the same thing happens. It did go away mostly but it comes back when she gets grains.

Here is a picture of her belly, at times the spots that you see on there now will like form one huge spot and get darker. Please excuse the scratch on her, it's from her puppy brother.

Hi James
Hello!
My Tessie had the same thing happen on her belly. I took her to the vet and they said it was fine, just pigment darkening. She had it all up and down her inside back legs and on her tummy. It eventually lessened.
I will try to post some pictures, hopefully I have some.

Same thing happened with sanford...
turned out it was nothing. When he was a little over a year old I noticed his belly turning dark in some areas. I was told to look into the alopecia as well as his thyroid etc and it turns out it was nothing. To this day his belly darkens sometimes and then goes back to white/pink and it is nothing at all to worry about.
Maybe reach out to you vet and tell them your concerns - when in doubt I'd ask for a professional opinion. I ended up being worried over nothing.
Good luck.

Does it look like a bruise?
Does the area on his belly look like a bruise? Do you live in area where he can get ticks? If the answer is yes to both questions, it could be ehrlichia.

no, its definitely not..
pigment spots. We do see those too, but its his actual skin where hair doesn't really grow on his belly... I will post a new picture when i get home tonight, but below is a picture of him before it got darker. A vet visit may be necessary to quell my concerns...thanks!

Pigments spots?
In the summer they lose the undercoat (coat thins) and then it's easier to see the pigment spots (especially on light colored dogs). Onslow has developed new spots so far up until about 2 1/2 years old most of them come out on the belly area also some in his face area around the nose and lips. Another thing that looks like dalmation spots that are on the fur - that is called ticking.

If you look closely at his sides you will see the pigment spots.

Pigment on face, the spot on left side of his upper lip is sort of new

Good shot of belly area

If it does not look like the above, it could be a fungus or SFA. You would need the vet to look at it. Hope this helps some.

hypothroid is exactly what came to mind for me also...
A proper test to deduce how much to supplement would be to do 8 or 12hr testing but for a baseline, a simple blood test will do. In nice weather its sometimes hard to pinpoint lethargy or heat-seeking behaviors but the skin and fur changes you've reported are classic signs of low thyroid.

let us know what the vet says
I agree that it's better to err on the side of caution and take him to the vet. Let us know what the vet says.

Agree with Trish
Sometimes we can almost give ourself heart attacks by worrying too much about our bullys. If you can, have a vet check him over.
Regarding the picture that I posted of Tessie, when we had to go out of town for a funeral and left her with the pet sitter, when we came back the spots had formed one big spot that covered her lower belly and inside her back legs - our vet said it was just coloring.

James - please check with your vet BEFORE you worry too much...
Honestly, that looks like Sanford's symptoms and it's really nothing. Maybe there's some technical terminology for it but I see his belly skin change colors on occassion and there isn't anything wrong with him. I just chalk it up to the seasons or whatever... but that's just me.
Believe me if I thought there was anything real wrong with him I would do anything to take care of it but it turned out that it was nothing.
I swear the first 2 years of having a bulldog are the HARDEST thing I've ever done. Everytime he sneezed I would think he was terminally ill and try to get every test done I could. He's just turned 4 now and I think I'm only now starting to freak out less.
Call your vet, don't read too much into things until you consult the professional. You can make yourself crazy researching and reading on the internet but until you have him checked officially I wouldn't panic. Yes, its good to be well educated and read up on everything but I know I can make a mountain out of a mole hill sometimes.
JMO of course. He's seems a bit young for a thyroid issue to appear but I'm NO expert.
Good Luck.

thyroid
it is a blood test. 2 symptoms of low thyroid are darkening skin and hair loss. Lethargy is another symptom. The picture you posted looks like his hair is very thin all over not just patches of hair loss. Iam surprised the vet didn't suggest checking.

thanks amanda, i hope...
that its the same thing rather than something worse. Your bully's belly seemed to get darker in spots, whereas Tank's entire area has darkened in hue....
Thanks for your concern!

no...is it easy?
No, should I take him in to the vet for a thyroid profile?
Thanks!
