Its not the cleaning you need...its the "cidal" effect, as in ki

You need a product that will kill off the mites, who are hiding deeper than you can reach them with a swab. Yes you can clean the ear folds with an oil altho I'll give you an easier and better solution to do this with (good home recipe given by my old vet) but you need a product designed for canine ear mites.

Ear wash solution: 1/3 measure of hydrogen peroxide, 1/3 measure of cider vinegar, and 1/3 measure of water. Keep in a closed container but I suggest you only mix up enough to use one time (ie, use 1 T. of each). Soak 1-2 cotton balls and wet the external ear, okay if some drips inside the opening. Rub gently to soften any accumulated wax/debris, then wipe out folds with Q-tips/swabs. Allow ear to 'dry' before applying any medication. Do not encourage dog to shake its head, as this may cause earflap hematoma.

I agree, and another option is...

Gentian violet mixture:

Mix:
16 oz. rubbing alcohol
4 oz boric acid
16 drops gentian violet
Mix in a squirt bottle and shake well before each use. Use it outside, the gentian violet will stain carpet, etc.
