If you feed raw - here's a tip you might want to look into!

heck, even if you don't feed raw exclusively, you still might want to check with your local butcher shop about this...would be a great "doggie treat"!!

I've been feeding what the butcher shops call "saw dust" since I started feeding raw - I don't feed it solely, I usually give it with "other" raw meats or premade raw rolls/patties - but I thought I'd share this with my fellow raw feeders as it's a FREE food option!!

I've spoken to owners of a current raw foods company, who previously owned a meat market and they thought this was a fabulous idea and while you may not know 100% the meat content vs. bone...it's still fine to supplement a meal with it like I do.

here is a picture of saw dust when I bring it home - I love the dust from this market, it's always so bright red...This store uses a very fine ban saw and cuts all their meat on the same saw, so it's a mixture of whatever they cut that day which can be pork, beef, chicken, etc.

I have 3 privately owned, meat markets I get this from and just recently spoke to a butcher at a grocery store chain and he has agreed to save me some too, so you just have to ask, he's even going to pack it in 2 lb bags and freeze it, then call me when he's got enough saved. Heck, they throw it away each day - what do they care if you get it?

Each place I get it from is different in texture and form, guess it depends on the saw type. Another meat market has a separate saw for beef and one for pork, so I get that separated. The pork tends to be a bit "soft" so I usually freeze it, then will send it partially frozen through my meat grinder with some partially frozen turkey heart

I store the meat I'm feeding in these plastic containers in my fridge, so I'll usually fill one when I bring the saw dust home, then I baggie the rest into quart freezer bags

Twister thinks it's pretty good too! and it's great for hiding pills in...just ask Dixie! LOL

just for my own curiosity sake I cooked some to see exactly how much meat was in it - and OMG! if I hadn't cooked it myself, I would have sworn it was store bought ground beef (although a low grade, because it was a tad greasy)

I've also used this to make baked meatballs for the dogs too...
