I can't clean my dog's wrinkles!

Whenever Newman comes back inside, his face is soaking wet from the grass, leaves, dirt, etc. I know I'm supposed to be cleaning and drying his face regularly...but he just won't let me. Even when I try to wait for him to calm down or get sleepy, he gets riled up whenever I try to get at his face with a cloth. When I try to force the issue, he starts biting. I've tried having my wife hold him and clamp his mouth shut...but I fear that I'm turning it into a traumatic experience that he'll fear and avoid even more. Does anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions?

Also...I've had Newman 1 week now, and have a few other questions. He's almost 10 weeks old and we're feeding him Nutromax Puppy. Is Canidae so much better that it's worth stressing his digestive system by switching? Also, he seems to have a thing about chewing his bones while propped up on my my feet, legs, arms, etc. By letting him use me as his "table," am I violating any of the alpha dog rules? In other words, is he trying to establish any status over me, or is he just cuddling? I hope just cuddling!

Also...I'd be curious to hear at what age your bulldog puppies started to be able to make it through the night without any accidents. I've been waking him up in the middle of the night to go...and it's been working. But, some people have told me that I'm just training him to get used to it. Should I start letting him have accidents just to get him into a better routine for when he can hold it? Or should I keep catering to him? I've heard two different answers from his vet clinic!

Sorry so long. I have lots of questions!!!

I agree on putting him on a kitchen counter

Or a table, he should relax. No bully usually likes there faced wiped but if you do it twice a day, then he will get use to it. About the potty training. Stop all food and water at 6:00 then make sure beore you go to be you take him out to go potty...Take him to the same place so then he will know where to go later.....They have no bladder control and they will hold it more and more....Just like a new born baby....hahaha....Good luck

treats

clean part of him and then give him a treat, every time, he will get to learn that if he tolerates it he will get something in return, it works well. be patient it will happen.

Yep..mine have all been on Nutro Max. Yours sounds like a normal

made it through the night fairly quickly. Zoe was l4.5 weeks old when she came here, and she always slept through the night at that age. However, she did wake me between 5-6 each morning at first. Even though she made it all night at that age, she went out all the time when she was awake because of playing, drinking, etc.

I know the alpha issue is a worry (I have had that issue with past dogs), but my bulldog has never tried to be the alpha in this house. She lets a l2 lb bossy pug run the place, and the bulldog will not argue with her. Even though you might see posts about some bulldogs trying to be alpha, I wouldn't worry at the moment. Some are just laidback, docile dogs.

You are gonna love having a bulldog.

John...

When drying his face, but him on a surface like a table...something where he wont be so "comfortable" and wiggle around. Make its postive always....telling him he will get a cookie..etc...
As for the Nurtro Puppy food...if he is doing well on it,why change.
The chewing and cuddling of is toys is normal behavior, I would not worry about that.
As for potty training during the night...I would let him wake you if he needs to go. Otherwise you are enforcing the needing to go potty in the middle of the night.
Good luck and have FUN!

Puppies

Since he is only 10 weeks old, he has no real bladder control. Continue to get up in the night to let him out so he doesnt pee in his crate. As he gets a little older, you can lengthen the time between outings.

Chewing toys while holding it on your foot is not a status seeking behavior. Relax, he is just hanging out with you.

Practice handling and restraint. Pick him up, hold his feet, rubs his ears, check his teeth etc. Do not let him down if he is struggling, only when he is settled. Letting him down while struggling will teach him that struggling gets him what he wants, you want him to learn that calm behavior gets him what he wants. Hold the cleaning cloth against his jowels, just for a second, "good boy" then remove it. Make it fun for him, its something you are going to have to do for years to come so you dont want him to learn to hate it.

Good luck, again, I suggest getting the book "Puppy Primer" by Brenda Scidmore and Patricia McConnell

Jakey would fight face cleaning too...

We tried everything and since he has allergies he has medicated wipes to clean his face, which made it worse. It really helped when we would let him smell it first and I would tightly grip a treat in my hands, lettting him lick it, but still holding it so he would stay. I spoke to him about being a good boy and sitting. He would stay for a few seconds at time until the time got longer and longer. Now, he still doesn't like it, but he allows us to wash and clean his face. Sometimes he still needs a treat, but not all the time.
