Humping question.....

So Deuce, who is 1, has NEVER been a humper. He was neutered at about 9 months and was not a humper before neutering nor after neutering. Well, recently he has started humping Oliver (5 months old) when they are playing. What is this all about?? A dominance thing? Why start now? What do we do? We always stop him and tell him no but we don't know why he just randomly started this behavior. Perhaps because Oliver is getting bigger and he needs to reassure his dominance because he is older?? I am just rambling but does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Probably because Oliver is getting older and larger

and their play intent and style are changing.

Lynn, one more question...

Why would he just start this behavior now??

Thanks Lynn....

I always assumed it was more of a dominance thing. There is never any sort of aggression associated with it when they are playing so it makes sense it is just a play thing. We will try not to make as big of a deal with it since he isn't doing anything wrong. We will just stick with telling him no and redirecting.

Thanks for your help!!

Mounting isn't always dominance based

dogs mount each other during play with no other intention but play. Dominance based mounting is distinctly different and you will see the difference in the behavior of both dogs. My guess is, its all in play. If it makes you uncomfortable, don't make a big deal out of it, just calmly stop it.
