How Much Glucosamine & Chondroitin ??

Good morning everyone . Winston is 5 months old and has been on Royal Canin Bulldog 24 food for a week now. As I have said before, he has been having some hip problems (looks like maybe growing pains). Vet also suggested yesterday to put him on a chew or granule to help strengthen his joints. He's a whopping 37 pounds !! The chews I bought are "human" and each contains 500mg glucosamine and 400mg Chondroitin. Is that too much for him ? I need some advice on how much to give him . A whole one or just half ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have a lot to learn !!

Thanks,

Carla

you are so right! it's just mind boggling

to try and sort it all out. and then figure out what info is legit or just PR. Then once you decide on one, hopefully it agrees with the dog. I did try a mussel based supplement recently and though the information was all positive I ended up with two dogs that broke out in hives after one dose - arrrghghg!

There are so many !

I have being gong mad trying to fin dth ebest combinatin fo rMY Golden. combining th eourest ingredients is the only way to know we are not adding somethgn that already esxits in nother supplement. Some contain yucca and boswella ( sp? ) bromenain, the green lip musce, chon/ gluso, Msm .... I knwo you can;t just arbitrarily dispence anythign that will hep withotu chalenging SOME organ, and th eliven is th emot susceptible. If we give milk wheat thistle, which supports liver health, it can also munimize the absoption of other ingredients. It's such a tough thng to rationalize.

I can only speak for Restor-a-Flex which

has both, but I swear by it. My golden retriever has hip displasia and Duncan has arthritis, and both showed tremendous improvement after being on it. I do wonder though if different ingredients/supplements work better for different dogs? Would be interesting to see some studies of each.

I take just glucosamine..

for myself. I have found that the mix of the two never works as well as just taking glucosamine alone. I don't know why that is. Because of my personal experience, I only give Sophia Glucosamine without the chondroitin. I will have to ask my doc about that one...

Duncan will be an 'old man' of 3 yrs

on July 31st Thanks & you have a great weekend too!

someone just told me ...

that her dogs do WORSE on th echondroiten and Glucosamine combnation than when she has her do g ( and herself ) on JUSt glucosmaine w/ MSM. I don't get that. Does any one know anything about chondroiten beign counter-productive ??

Re: How Much Glucosamine & Chondroitin ??

Thanks Sharon. How old is Duncan ? I bet he is a doll baby ! My vet just called back and said 2 chews daily for the first month to six weeks and then one daily. Sounds like we are on the right track. Have a great weekend.

Thanks Again,

Carla & Winston

Re: I buy 1000 mg Glucosamine capsules...

Thanks a bunch . Sounds like they are about the same age and come with the same problems . HAHA !! We will try that and see how it goes. I can tell the difference just changing to adult food so I hope this will make him feel even better.

Re: How Much Glucosamine & Chondroitin ??

Duncan takes a dog supplement for arthritis that is 500mg/500mg of each per tablet. I'd have to check the bottle to be sure, but I believe recommendation was 25-49 lbs, 2 tablets per day initially for the first 3 weeks, then 1 tablet per day as maintenance. He weighs just over 50 lbs and I give him 3 per day just because he was so stiff and wanted to be sure he was getting enough. The vet said more couldn't harm him, at worst his body just wouldn't absorb/use the excess. Poor baby, growing pains are no fun, hope he's feeling better soon!

I buy 1000 mg Glucosamine capsules...

the kind that have powder inside and you can pull the capsule apart??!! Anyway, I open a capsule and pour the powder over Sophia's food morning and night, so she gets 2000 mg of Glucosamine daily. I do not use chondroitin, but only because I can not find it in any higher dosage than 400 mg, and I think Sophia needs more than that. She had "loose" hips when I got her and bad knees, but the Glucosamine has solved those problems in just a couple of months. She is doing great now. She is only 5 and a half months old.

Good luck with this.

This was for Bacon...:)

Are you in Ariz?

I used to go to Trader Joes in Scottsdale... I was just wondering if you live down there...

Amy and Sophia

If you have a Target...

they sell the Glucosamine Sulfate 1000mg capsule form for about 10.00 or so for 120 count. Brand is Origin, and they are pretty good. I use this brand for myself and my dogs.

Re: I also found

Guess a lot of it is trial & error. The things we won't do for our bullies !!

Re: Trader Joe's

We are in Northern Alabama. I don't think we have any of those stores around here but thank you for the good report. I hope to see an improvement soon.

Carla & Winston

We are in Northern California

There are Trader Joes in AZ, but not Alabama. Their website shows all their locations www.traderjoes.com.

I also found

that we just do the glocosomine with msm I totally agree with you

Trader Joe's

If you have a Trader Joe's grocery store near you, they have a Glucosamine & Chondroitin chewable for dogs that has worked great for Bacon. He used to have that "crunching" sound in some of his joints, but that has stopped after a month or so on these. I don't have the bottle right now for the dosage, but Bacon gets one a day with his breakfast. He's 3 and weighs 68 pounds. I think there are 100 pills for about $10.

Can I ask you where you get this stuff?
