How many have had success with Cherry Eye massage?

My puppy Harley had Cherry eye surgery (tacked) on right eye at 9wks. He is now 15 weeks and the last few days the other eye has been "popping out" once or twice daily but I have been able to massage it back in quite easily. He has an appointment tomorrow with our Vet but I am trying to find out if we should wait and see if it stays down. Don't want to have something done if it isn't really necessary but on the other side, if it is just going to keep coming back I would just as soon have it taken care of now.

I'm not sure...

At what age the muscle becomes strong enough to hold the gland in place. I know that puppies have weaker muscles around the eye that will allow the gland to pop out. If it's easily massaged back in, I'd wait on surgery. Plus (not knowing where you live), tree pollen is on the rise, now. This can cause allergies and irritation (with resultant swelling) that can promote the gland popping out.
Of course, talk to your vet about this! happy.gif

Cherry Eye

Several years ago I had a puppy that had a cherry eye keep popping out. I had taken him to my vet and he recommended the surgery. I did not want to have to do that unless it was absolutely necessary. I looked back through my old bulldoggers and found an article written by a very respected breeder judge regarding cherry eye. She said that she used TEARS NATURAL on a regular basis, several times a day, and was able to keep her dog from having the surgery. So, I found the drops at my local store and started using them several times a day and my dog NEVER had to have the surgery. As he got older it popped out less and less. If he rubbed his face along the couch or something like that it would pop out and I gently massaged it back in. It is definitely worth a try. Years later I continue to use these drops on my dogs eyes. I hope this helps you.

WE DO!!

George's eye has been popping out randomly for the last few months. Our vet showed us how to pop it back in and it works for us. Good luck!!

How?

How does one actually massage it back in? Sorry for the stupid question but is there a technique?

Harley cherry eye update

Appreciate all responses and advise. Had the vet appointment today. This morning Harley's eye looks perfectly normal. Still normal at noon so I call vet. They advise to wait and see. If it is staying down most of the time it's possible that it will stop coming out entirely. One hour after cancelling appointment out it came. Massaged it back down immediately and it has looked fine every since. Hate the thought of putting him thru another Cherry eye procedure. Hoping that it will decide to stay put!

It's fairly easy, but doesn't always work.

I also stumbled on that Youtube video when Harley had his first Cherry eye. I tried but it didn't work. Think maybe the cherry had been out too long. This time I tried as soon as I saw the "bubble". I gently massaged bottom eyelid up and over cherry then, very gently pushed in a bit while also massaging down. Worked the first attempt. I have had to do it once or twice daily for the last few days. Called my vet this morning. See Harley update.

I have a dog that is 8 years old...

and he has one that pops out, when rubbing his face or walloring around on the floor. I have always been able to massage it back in without any problems...and he has had it for a long time. I know sometimes they can't be, but I have been lucky. HOpe this helps.

My Experience

i have had numerous dogs with cherry eye.
only one was able to be mesaged back in and stayed.  I think with his situation the eye was irritated and it popped out I used neo poly bac ointment and it went back in I continued to use it for another few days, but the others, if they popped out again as your did, I had them fixed, surgically by making a pocket and putting the gland back in.  I never had them taken off.
