How long before tacked Cherry Eye looks normal?

My puppy Harley had cherry eye tacked by a great Bulldog vet at 9 weeks. It is now 6 weeks since surgery and his eye still looks red and swollen on bottom. We are still applying ointment and it doesn't bother him at all. He has been back to vet a couple times since surgery and they assure us that it looks as it should. We didn't expect that it would take this long to heal and look more normal.
Would love to hear from others that have had this procedure done and how long healing usually takes.

agree with Lottie

My Belle just had this surgery with the same outcome as many of you have stated. One thing that has helped is when my vet changed the antibacterial eye ointment to one that also included a steriod. This has helped the look, although this is temporary. (It got us through our show this weekend)

My vet wants to see her eye again and has offered to remove the gland, if we were not happy with the tacking. I want to know if the eye will look normal at that point, OR is the bottom lid just too stretched out??

Our Buddy had the cherry eye tacked twice...

His was huge also and the first time it was tacked it popped out by the same night of the surgery. Our vet tacked it for us again (at no charge) and this time it has stayed "in", but it does look more red then the other eye and kind of has that sagging look to it. Sounds like it might be normal to stay like that.

Unfortunaltely,

I agree with Rhiann.  I have hadf multiple dogs with cherry eye.  One of my shar-pei the eye ahd a balck rim around it so it didn't look as bad as my Spike, he hasw a white face, and as Rhiann said the haw sticks out too much and it's red.  However,  Spike's cherry eye was hughe, the whole gland popped out and they wouldn'[t do surgery until he was three months, because he had terrible breathing issues, so the longer it stayed it seems that the eye stretched and never came back up.

Wish I would have known also

Thanks so much for info. Your photos of puppy look exactly like what our Harley's eye looks like right now. I am regretting the decision I made to have his eye tacked rather than cut. Our first bulldog had also had cherry eye as a puppy and we had this one snipped. He never had more problems with that eye than he did the one that had not had cherry eye and it looked normal within minutes of procedure. This time same vet but Harley needed a umbilical hernia repair also so when asked which procedure I wanted I said whatever the vet thought was best. If I had known how much more recovery and then the result I would have definately opted for snip.
I am now wondering if this could now be snipped and look better?[linked image]
Sorry about photo size. Haven't figured this out just right yet.

IMO

I my opinion, I prefer cutting to tacking. In my years of having bulldogs, I've found very little difference in dry eye from a tacked vs a cut cherry eye. I have a girl sitting at my feet that is almost 9 and her cherry eyes were removed as a pup and she still has no dry eye. Her mother had her cherry eyes tacked and she got dry eye at a very young age(youngest of any bully I've ever had). I think many bullies in old age get dry eye, even if they never had cherry eye.But I've even had some that had cherry eyes removed that never got dry eye. I've had eyes messed up from tacking, but never from cutting, so for me I would cut them vs tacking. I believe tacking can work well if u have a vet very skilled in this area and u can get that cherry eye tacked within 24 hours of it popping out(but most vets are not this accommodating). If the cherry eye is really big they have to pretty much mutilate it to make it to fit back, and then it's not going to work well, but be more of a problem and stay inflamed. I know this is very controversial, so this is just my opinion that has been formed from my own experience over many years of raising bullies. I've also never had a bully that had a cherry eye removed that had any irritation afterwards like so many do from tacking. Lottie

unfortunatly not all tacking procedures (pics to show)

go back as normal. I was outraged at this because had i known what the outcome could have been i would have resorted to other measures since this was my show prospect.

You can see here as a pup how the eye was still red a few weeks after surgery

here is Mia age 3 poor quality pic but you can see it never changed.....she had her eye tacked at 16-8 weeks of age. The eye never pulled back up and it never stayed white ever again. So much of the haw shows and it drives me nuts! I hope this is not the case for you but i wanted you to see worse case scenario is that it may stay the way it looks..

mine too

my Mr. Higgins had cherry eye tacking at 13 weeks by an opthomologist. He is now 4 1/2. His eyes have remained red, one more that the other. I am told this is normal.
