My Winston had a staph infection a few months ago (crusty, bald spots on his back) and after three weeks on cephalexin his back was all cleared up. But then I noticed a bald spot about the size of tennis ball on his throat. My vet said to try and keep it dry. Clean with peroxide and the put on some medicated powder. But this doesn't seem to be working. He said the next step may be to go to a dermatologist. Should I put him back on the antibotics for another round?
Any thoughts?
I have been doing the Gold Bond thing......
But the problem I am having because of where it is, it never seems to stay dry because of all the folds of skin. When I feel it sometimes, it is sticky moist and there is little bit of an odor. I don't know if the odor is from sweat mixed with the Gold Bond?? He has had this for about a month now. I will keep on with the Gold Bond thing.

Thanks for your input

hot spots...
antho I've heard that many believe them to be bacterial I have yet to read the definitive explanation of why they come and what exactly they are composed of, but a large red spot that has come up suddenly on the neck certainly sounds like a hotspot. I would clean it well, gently with antibacterial soap/water (using wash cloth??)and rinse well! Then pat dry and apply liberal amount of Gold Bond Medicated Powder...I mean really pack it on to form a temporary "scab" and re-do this in another 2 days if needed. Be sure you are treating it up to the edges, and go 1/4 inch beyond if you can.
May take about one week to clear up.

Wash it every couple days, with shampoo or
Dial liquid soap/water and rinse well. Put on the powder when it is dry. If it has been there for a month or more you may need a vet and some antibiotics. That is a loooong time for a hot spot!
