High alk phos

Hello, you may remember I lost George, just two years old, two months ago to BLOAT, since that time Gracie, his sister was to have corrective eye surgery, her right eye lid turned in (entropion), however I am now reading surgery is not always necessary. She looks like she is so uncomfortable. Her lab work came back with high levels of alk phos, high alt and low thyoid, some other misc numbers and the surgery was delayed.
Now, I am reading about liver cancer and the signs and sympoms (respiratory problems and BLOAT). She really gets out of breath, not too overweight, but since George died she has lost 5 pounds. My Vet wants to repeat lab work in a few weeks to see if the values have dropped and if not, they will start looking for other issue. High Alk phos levels can be related to liver, intestine and bone cancers.
I have this awful feeling she is heading in the same direction as George. However, when he died, I was told it was BLOAT, but maybe they didn't look for anything else. I am sure in the necropy his liver would have looked diseased.
My neighbor thought it may be genetic. I am being overly concerned, but when I look at her, I can see George.
Does anyone have any ideas? I feel comfortable with my Vet, just wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

what about the thyorid.....

are you taking meds to correct this as many times blood valves will be totaly off and of course weight loss is a big sign....so before i worried alot i would get the thyorid in order then repeat the blood work....
as they say treat one thing at a time.....and the thyorid is a big deal to get corrected....

Re: Thyroid

From personal experience (me - not the dogs) if the Thyroid level is out of whack it can wreak havoc on every system in your body.
Mine got messed up due to anti-inflammatory and pain meds I was taking for tendonitis in my elbow and a concurrent broken bone in my foot. It felt like I was 90 years old; just taking a shower tired me badly enough I needed a 2 hour nap and my glucose level went into the diabetic range. I became anemic, gained weight, my hair and fingernails got brittle and I was CRANKY (ok, I was a bitch) It took about a year to get my Thyroid level settled down after I stopped the anti-inflammatory and pain drugs. Now I feel back to normal - almost.
Sure hope your girl's issues are linked to something as simple to control as Thyroid level.

Re: what about the thyorid.....

Yes, Gracie was started on a form of dog thyroid medication twice a day. So, that will be rechecked in a few weeks. In people it takes about 8 weeks to see a lab change, so I know it will take a few weeks for any change in lethergy and weight.

I think its prudent to retest her blood values

and to postpone any surgery until you get some clarification of the function of her systems. Sending best wishes to both your bullies, Gracie and Jack. happy.gif happy.gif

Good Luck and Congratulations

I'm sure Jack will be just fine even if the breeder has (maybe) not been entirely honest with you. I know how heartbreaking this breed can be and please don't borrow trouble until you know if there is a problem or what the problem is. It's very stressful to constantly be thinking "what if".

I pray Gracie's test all come out OK and if the only thing wrong with little Jack is a small scar then I would be happy with that. I've heard that calm coat helps to regrow hair.

Re: Were they littermates?

Yes, they were brother and sister. Yes, I am using eye ointment and eye wash. Thank you.

I must share with you, I took the plunge and another pup, I am the writer with the pup with the scar, I just responded. He is doing well. One night Gracie and I were watching "Pirates of the Carribean" and that ole Jack Sparrow made us laugh...so I took the plunge and we got Jack...but now after this past week, I can not tell you how sad I feel...

Jack is fine, Vet checked at 12 pounds at 8 weeks and both Gracie and Jack have bonded very nicely...he run to follow her and she stops to see if he is behind her...

Were they littermates?

Is that the reason you are concerned they may have the same issues? I will keep Gracie in my thoughts and prayers. Did the Vet give you any ointment to put in her eyes until she can have the surgery? If not, I suggest using some lubricating eye drops.
