This is my first post, however, I have received a ton of advice from everyone
here for the past year we have had our boy. THANKS!
Here is the dilema. Roscoe just turned 1 year in July, he has been on Cephelexin since he was 3mo.old for "skin infection" Took him off of the meds for 3 days, and he got his circular bare spots again. Several skin scrapes always show just "bacteria". Vet says it's allergies and wants to sent to "specialist" however, as much as we love our bully, we are not ready to go down that finacial road yet. He is constantly itching now (not sure if all the major shedding has anything to do with that??) Flaky skin, recurring ear infections and TERRIBLE chewing on his feet.
My question is considering he has been on the antibiotic for SO LONG, shouldn't he go on a probiotic? If so, WHAT?
Also, have read some great stuff about Coconut Oil. Anyone currently using and having luck. Right now we do fish oil on the food daily.
Roscoe is on California Natural Lamb&Rice ONLY. And is currently taking the Cephelexin and just started 2 days ago, ketaconazole for yeast...although, yeast didn't show up. Also, we use an all natural shampoo. We have done the Apple Bitter for the feet chewing, but he still continues. Have done the epson salts... I know he is miserable. Vet says next is to try Atopica (which I am totally against) and then Prednisone... don't really want to
do that either.
Any advice welcome!!!

probiotics should not hurt and may help.. however...
leaving this poor baby on an antibiotic for that long is ridiculous and can cause problems all its own. My suggestions would be... by some malaseb shampoo (unless you have tried this).. bath him once a week for three or four weeks and then every couple after that... now some people get a little queasy with this but try feeding raw and do not add vegetables (at least not in the beginning). You may certainly need a specialist however I would definitely try the things I have mentioned :O) Good luck and kisses to the baby :O)

I have been down this road (well one simular)
Put him on Natures balance rice and duck.
Mason can't eat chicken, lamb or rice...I have tried the foods you mentioned. Also give nothing but this food and maybe fruit or raw carrots if your bullie likes that. Mason loves raw carrots. This way you will know everything that goes in his month as this food is a limited ingredient food.
As for the culture I would suggest plaint active yogurt, my vet had Mason eating yogurt when he was three months old to off set the medication he was taking for a food allergy.
When Mason has a reaction to something like food it last weeks. My poor boy but now he is on the mend and doing great. Many bullies cant eat chicken and lamb (lamb is a hot meat), its frustrating but after reading the boards and learning this nature balance stuff is great. give it a try.
If you have pics of his coat, please post I would be interested to see the spots you mention.
Hope this helps.

Maybe you need a different Vet
I hate to say it but it sounds as if your Vet is clueless as to what is wrong with your dog. Morgan was tested for allergies recently with a blood test and it cost $375. The price the specialist quoted was probably for a skin allergy test.

blood test
there is a blood test that only cost me about $150, we learned from it that Bubba is allergic to beef, turkey and lamb and peanuts. He did well on canidae chicken and rice for a while. Now he is on taste of the wild salmon and he is doing good on that. The test was well worth the money. We found out later he has a thyroid problem also.

Don't know why your vet has him on an
antibiotic that doesn't seem to be doing much good. Has he been tested for ringworm?
His skin problems may not be his food, could be laundry soap, the shampoo that you are using to bathe him, carpet/floor cleaners, lawn treatments etc., etc.,
Personally, if he were my dog, I would stop everything. Antibiotics for so long are only diminishing his natural immune system. I've had great luck with Wellness Fish/Potato.
Good luck

Re: Yes, it can take awhile
Totally agree w/ Jacinda. These foods weren't the best quality. I would go totally grain free. Maybe try Tast of the Wild or Natural Balance-Limited Ingredient kibble. Give it a couple of weeks.

Coconut oil is wonderful! Try it. It will boost the immune system. Best of luck to you.

Re: allergy testing
Can your vet perform an allergy test? It is just a simple blood test sent to either spectum labs or Varl. This may help to pinpoint the problem. Has he also been scaped for demodex?
The Vet said he would send to "the specialist" for testing and that it
would be about $1000! He has been scraped for demodex in the past, with
nothing showing, however, vet did put him on a round of Ivermectin at
that point and things got better. (about 6 mo ago) Very confusing!

The other foods weren't very good quality in my opinion.

This is the 4th Food
We started with Royal Canin - Bulldog
Then to Blue Buffalo Puppy, Blue Buffalo Salmon/Sweet Pot. Then Blue Buff. Lamb/Rice.
Went off Blue Buffalo 1 week ago, yesterday, thinking he might have an allergy to the tomato pomace filler.
Califonia Natural has a great rating for allergies on dogfoodanalysis.com and
realize it may take his system a while to fully adjust.

All those antibiotics can't be good. The answer is yes to probiotics, but that is not going to help the itching. It will just protect the good bacteria in his gut which is very important. Good Luck!
He can't stay on antibiotics for the rest of his life
And they don't seem to me doing much good anyway. I would go with your Vet's advice and see a specialist. He needs allergy testing.

Have you tried any other dog foods? He may be allergic to the food you are feeding. I have had good results with Natural Balance Potato and Fish.

Keep us updated please
Would love to know what finally works for him. All dogs are different and allergies are especially hard to treat. Good luck!

Thanks for all!
Thank you all for your responses! I feel like we are doing the "right" things as far as allergens...dye free detergent, great shampoo...can't recall the name. But, we haven't tried the medicated shampoo (malesab?) yet. He doesn't eat anything at all other than his Lamb/Rice California Natural food...which is only lamb meal, rice and sunflower oil. Great ingredients, however, haven't considered him being allergic to the lamb. His treats are all CN Lamb/Rice also with no other ingredients that would trigger allergies. I will keep him on this for another 2 weeks, and make a change if necessary. I guess my next step is to start the probiotics, take him off the Cephelexin for now and see how he does on one round of the other antibiotic vet put him on last week for yeast, ringworm..even though, didn't show up on the slide. Plus, start the medicated shampoo. And wait for cold weather to see if things change with that.
I am suppose to call my vet when this round of antibiotics is done to go from there. May ask him about the blood test...or may just find another vet!
I'll keep everyone informed!
Thanks again for everyone's imput!

Maybe he is allergic to protein?
One of my bullies is allergic to protein and grains, maybe try Purina HA, it is a vet diet, and is awsome for allergies. Maybe you could try it before having to go for tests, it may help if it's food allergies, if it's enviromental, then you will have to go a different route.

Re: allergy testing
I would try a different food and perhaps a different vet. I have dealt with allergies in the past and they can be hard to treat. To find what works best for your dog is a lot of trial and error.
I did do allergy testing and it was not 1000.00 and it was done at an animal dermatologist. We found a combination of antibiotics that worked for my dog and he did great. I also switched foods.
I fed then and feed now Natural Balance. Back with my dog that had skin allergies I fed Duck and Potato. I now feed Natural Balance Fish and Potato. Sometimes the allergies can be environmental and then they can be very hard to treat and usually during the warmer weather it will be worse, at least in my experience. I hope that you can find some relief for your baby. I know that it is frustrating. If he is a foot licker, and has constant ear infections and skin issues then he definitely has allergies and you just need to find the right meds to get him under control. I also did allergy testing on my dog and did allergy shots and that helped tremendously. I hope you can find a solution soon.

Re: HELP! Probiotics/Coconut Oil?
I think Cephalexin is commonly used long term for skin issues, but I haven't heard of it being used for a year--doesn't mean it shouldn't be. With your concern, I'd get a second opinion for peace of mind. Definitely give the probiotics--not at the same time as antibiotic--at least a couple of hours before or after antibiotic. Try to build up his immunity, too. Astragalus root is good for this and was prescribed for my boy who is suffering from IDC's at 1/2 tbs. of powder twice daily (this actually amounts to more than 3 times the dosage stated on the bottle of capsules). I've heard good things about the coconut oil...it can be taken orally and applied topically. Good luck.

I have a bulldog that is a little over two years old. Up untill a month ago he had been on some sort of medication for his skin infections. He had been on prednisone for so long I lost track. My boy never got better and I tried everything. We are on our fourth vet and I believe the vets do take advantage of the love you have for your pet. For almost two years and three vets the diagnosis was the same, antibiotics and prednisone. I finally took him off everything and for a couple weeks he was sick(most likely from withdrawal). I am pretty sure that the paw licking and chewing is a result of a food allergy and it will be difficult to single out. What I have done is to stop everything and start over. Simple is better! What I have done is stick to what I know my boy can eat. Plain cooked hamburger rinsed in hot water. I added a litle cambells beefy mushroom for taste. It has taken almost two weeks but the skin irritations are gone and so is the smell. He actually is starting to act like himself again. STOP all the table scrap feeding and keep treats handy if he begs at the table. I hope this helps. If you want to contact me you can do so through my email. I have pictures and stories that may help and I hope you dont go through what I did with my boy. Just a hint! Brutus is my 10,000 dollar baby!
