DH's mom just called me today saying she found one on her bully & then tonight I find one on Howie...I swear DH brought it home w/him after visiting his parents! LOL...anyway, last year I did that Frontline & I could see it on their back/fur nearly all summer...I hated that...I've seen photos of how some dogs have bad reactions to it too....so wondering what you all recommend...if it's Frontline, that's fine, but I'm just a little concerned w/Vivi's white fur...will there be a yellow line down her back if I use it? I know it's cosmetic & I should be more concerned about her health than her fur, but just wondering if there are other options out there?
I did find online some oral meds for fleas...any of you try those at all?

Helen's advice is the best
I tried this in my yard last year and it works like a charm.

We also had these burrowing bees (they were humungous)near where Onslow's pee area was. I was so scared he would get stung. I spread some SevinDust in the holes in the ground they were coming out of and it took care of them too.
Very very good product.

What I do
I beat the fleas by vacuuming daily and bathing the pups weekly. When I bathe them I take up all the bedding from their perla beds and nite crates and wash them. clean pups and clean bedding. We only have carpet in the bedroom so this helps as well. I have never used flea preventive, scares me. I used some on my Pom years ago and she got real lethargic, had to rush her to the sink and wash the stuff off the best I could. Never used it since.

Once you make sure you have gotten every spot that is it for at
a year maybe longer. I only did it twice 1 year apart. I now only use Adams when I go to the vet, dog shows or anywhere there are other dogs that may have fleas. It is a repellant and residual for a week.

How often do you go around the yard w/it? Weekly?
After it rains? etc??

Very interesting....I've never heard of this...I hope we don't have any more fleas in the house, but I guess you can never be to sure. Thanks for the info!

True...flea powders are not safe
I used to use them until I found out the harm they cause to animals and the environment. Some people are able to use them without any adverse effects upfront, but chemical pesticides are known to cause cancer and other health problems later on down the road. Plus the more we use these, the more fleas and other insects build up a resistance to them. Frontline has been around for a while, and we are starting to see flea and tick populations better able to tolerate it.

I wouldn't consider flea powders safe either but I'm
trying to stay away from chemicals, just a personal choice.

I will post again what I have done for years and MY DOGS DO NOT
I go to Lowes' or Home Depot and get enough Sevin Dust 5%(used in flea powder) to spread all over the yard using an old flour sifter while walking and covering the whole area. If you already have a flea problem you also need to spread it in the house overnight and keep the dogs in crates(it will not harm them but just to be safe)then vaccuum it up first thing in the M. Also go to Petsmart or get it on line Adams Flea Off in a spray bottle. This can be used once a week or once a month as you like. It also has a nice smell and deodorizes as it kills the fleas.

Sevin Dust is a hazard to pets and children
Many dogs have gotten sick from coming into contact with it. Not to mention that any pesticides that we're using on our lawns or gardens can soak into the soil and then go into our water supply. The frog population is suffering due to over use of pesticides, plus we could end up drinking this stuff--yuck! I would recommend finding a nature-friendly flea repellent like garlic. I have never had any issues with fleas, and I live in Arkansas and have neighbors with bad flea issues. We have an organic garden, and in order to keep pests under control we use neem oil. So far, we have had no flea issues. Here's some information about pets and pesticides:
Pets and Some Risks of Pesticides
¡ A 1991 National Cancer Institute (NCI) study,
published in the Journal of the NCI, found that
dogs whose ownersf lawns were treated with 2,4-
D, four or more times per year, are twice as likely
to contract canine malignant lymphoma than
dogs whose owners do not use the herbicide.
¡ Exposure to herbicide-treated lawns and gardens
increases the risk of bladder cancer by four to
seven times in Scottish Terriers, according to a
study by Purdue University veterinary researchers
published in the April 15, 2004 issue of the Journal
of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
¡ Research published in the December 1988 issue
of Preventive Veterinary Medicine links hyperthyroidism
in cats to flea powders and sprays, lawn
pesticides and canned cat food.
¡ Allethrin, a common ingredient in home mosquito
products (coils, mats, oils and sprays)
and other bug sprays, has been linked to liver
problems in dogs, according to a 1989 study by
the World Health Organization.
¡ The 1989 edition W.C. Campbell Toxicology textbook
reports that chronic exposure to abamectin,
an insecticide often used by homeowners on fire
ants can affect the nervous system of dogs and
cause symptoms such as pupil dilation, lethargy,
and tremors.
