We don't use heating pads. We use utility lamps. The puppies are able to adjust their own heat by moving away from the heat lamp.

Just make sure your heating pad doesn't have an automatic shut off. Most new ones do now.

I'm helping a friend raise his litter of 9. He's using a heating pad...set on LOW. It's been on for 2 weeks now. No problems.

I use a heating pad, but I will tell you I am pretty much with my pups the first week to week and a half with my pups.

I had a friend in high school that had a mattress heating pad , that caught her bedroom on fire, when she left in on to go to school. So it always is in the back of my mind when using them.

and never had a problem. BUT I test the pad before the pups arrive(I keep several on hand in case the one I am using goes out). I double check the cord and the heat pad itself before each litter. If the heat pad starts to get brown on the plastic casing I trash it. I date my heat pads also when I purchased them and after a couple years I also trash them. Might be overkill to trash them after a couple of years but I don't like to take chances. There is a whelping dish you can purchase. I've never used one but I think Revival carries it.

I have personally experienced getting burned by a heating pad so I steer clear of using them for my pups. I use instead what we used on the farm for baby pigs, baby chicks, etc. I use a heat lamp with a heat lamp bulb that is the clamp on style one can find at any well supplied farm store. I clamp it first on to the side of the whelping box and move it up or down as needed to keep an even temp for the little pups. As they grow, I move it higher-lessening the direct heat as they grow. I also have a remote sensor in the bottom of the whelping box underneath the "pig rail" so it cannot be reached to be chewed etc. and it sends the temp to the remote thermometer reader which I have up on the wall. Large digits so I can read it from far away-old eyes need big letters! Ha! Ha! That way I know immediately what the temp is. Heat will only reaching approximately a third of the box so the pups can squirm away if it is too hot. This set up has worked great for me.
