Cooper started head shakes probably a good year ago... it's happened probably 4 times in a year and then all of a sudden this month its been happenning much more frequently. He's also been nervous lately (he's a nervous dog to begin with) I'm attributing it to getting a fence and we're enclosing the front porch and a lot of thunder lately - he gets nervous with change and loud noises. So he's been chewing/licking his feet and he started head shaking. I wonder if the head shakes can be associated with nerves?
The only change is a switch from California Natural to Merrick's Before Grain. Merricks protein content is 32% He was on EVO for a while and we didn't have problems (protein with evo is 42%)

Any info would be appreciated, usually if I distract him, ask him if he wants to go out, feed him something they stop... but today he had a long one and would snap out of it and then start up again. Should I take him to the vet about them?
Thanks
Head Tremors?
Are you referring to head tremors, a shaking of the head left and right? There is an article that leads one to believe it is a blood sugar issue. After 25 years of having a bulldog pets we started seeing head tremors. My vet thought it was an inner ear issue. The article I read advised to give the dog a sugary spoonful of something like honey, peanut butter, or ice cream. I tried this and it did seem to stop the tremors right away. We did not see these at times where stress or anxiety could have been the cause.

vaccination caution
You mentioned Cooper was due for his vaccinations - if he was my dog I'd keep the appointment to have his head-shakes evaluated but NOT get him vaccinated! Some dogs can have adverse reactions to vaccinations and the last thing you want to do is vaccinate a dog when it is in any way compromised. It can add to the mix of symptoms and make figuring out what is going on with him that much more difficult, if not actually make him worse.
If you normally take him in annually for vacs, waiting a few months or more won't be dangerous to him. Most Vets say there is a falloff in protection after 12 months, but will admit to 18 months of protection. Alternatively, your Vet can draw blood and have it sent to a Lab for titer testing to see if Cooper has enough immunity to forgo vaccinations entirely.
Hope you find out what is causing his head-shakes and can help get him over them.

THanks Lori - He
was fine on EVO - and the Before Grain has 10% less protein so I don't think it's diet for him.

This weekend was a ton of construction going on, so I'm hoping that for him its stress related. The loud part of the work is done so thing should be calming down for him now.
Thanks for all the replies guys - I will mention it to the vet when we go just in case.

thank you
my vet does vaccines every 3 years, but we've talked about doing titers instead of vaccines.

EVO-head shakes
not sure if related or not, but when Spike was on this food he developed fly biting siezures. I witched food and they stopped. I think it's the protein. No prrof just my opinion.

Someone on another foum
has one who gets tremors when she's stressed. I think that's whats going on with Coop. We're doing construction to the house, and to be honest, he's the type of dog who gets stressed when you move a broom so any kind of change is tough on him.

He's just about due for his vaccines though so I'll make sure to get a full checkup while we're there. Thanks for the replies!

Separation anxiety?
He may need a goo check up at the Vet's.

the chewing and licking are his nervous habit... he only
does it when he's left home alone. He's been really bad lately, the dogs have the guest room when we're out and he totally destroyed the blinds and screens the other day... we were gone for about 2 hours. I'm not sure what's bothering him.

It sounds like a problem with the food
Especially with the chewing and licking of the feet.
