Hacking Cough and "cherry Eye?"
Submitted by admin on April 20, 2010 - 8:47pmI have female bullie at 3 mos. She has this hacking cough like something stuck in her throat. As like a hairball. Is there something I should give her to maybe ease the pain? Her eye, the gland is coming out! It looks so painful. I tried to massage it in, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I gave her Benedryl, and it went down once, but now, whatever I try, nothing seems to work. Help. Can someone give me advice? I am a first time bullie owner.

but this doesnt sound like that, sounds like a sick puppy who needs medical attention.
Idont want to scare you but kennel cough, can go to pneumonia very fast and a bulldog can die from that very fast also

Take her to the vet...I have been battling "Severe Chronic Kennel Cough" with my baby (she is 11) going on 4 weeks now, and it is not looking good for her....I hope she is better real soon!

no, coke is fine, lemon juice is okay, but most pups don't like it. I would make an appointment to the vet for checkup to make sure. you can give the 7up, etc. in the meantime to help. Keep the puppy warm and dont' take outside.

The pup needs more then coke or sprite..sound slike she has kennel cough possibly. The whole lemon juice/sprite thing is for emergencies in extreme heat or such when the dog pants so hard it's airways swell and gets blocked by extreme phlegm that cannot not pass. This sounds more like kennel cough and the pup will need to be checked by the Vet and most likely given meds. The cherry eye probably popped out due to the pup coughing and being under stress. so coke cant hurt them, is it ok to spry lemon juice or does it need to be diluted with water
ours too!!
WE are also first timers we have a 5 1/2 month old that just had to have the cherry eye fixed with surgery to remove the gland and it has healed up nice...we also had the neutering and microchip done at the same time. We tried drops in the eye first but it kept getting worse. Good luck!!!

the hacking and coughing may be she's trying to cough up phlegm. give her some 7-up, sprite or coke, you have at home. as for the cherry eyes, bulldogs tend to have this, giving benadryle won't make it go down. Benadryle is given when the dog has an allergic reaction and either itches, have bumps all over. The cherry eye gland will need to be removed or tacked down. I've heard that tacking it down, sometimes it pops up again so others have removed it and give natural tears(found in the grogery stores) twice a day or as needed, morning and bedtime to keep the eye moist

hacking cough can turn to pneumonia very very fast. The cherry eye can be fixed at a later date, its ugly but not painful.
you can get some drops from the vet when you check on the cough.
