when i take Otis (7months) to get groomed, he does not like to have his nails clipped. He acts like he is in excruciating pain and tries to bite the groomer. what can i do to make him have a more comfortable salon visit? any help would be appreciated.
Re: grooming visits
All it really takes to freak a dog out is for someone to "manhandle" them. The minute you try to pin someone down.. animal or human they're are going to panic and struggle, maybe the groomer was too forceful. Again, just try one nail at a time, letting the paw rest in your hand ......... I'll bet you can turn it around, but remember you have to come at in a confident but relaxed mood.. ( Im a big dog whisperer fan!)

Re: grooming visits
you know alanna i was thinking the same thing, that maybe he had a bad experience at one point but i wasn't told by the groomer. will try the treats and praise and maybe i can give it a shot and try trimming them myself. thanks for the info.

Do the same thing
with the clippers around him.

You could also consider dremmeling, perhaps he'd do better with that.

Re: grooming visits
I think it depends a lot on the person doing the trimming. I do Boog's myself, it's easy on him because his nails are white. I make sure I just let his paw rest in my hand, if I try to hold it, he'll try to pull back and then you end up having a wrestling match. If the groomer tries to hold him forcefully, then you're going to have trouble. You could try doing it yourself, I've heard of some people just doing one nail a day, if the dog is really scared. Always do it when they're sleepy. Sounds like Otis has had a bad experience so it will take lots of patience to make it into a positive experience. Boog actually falls asleep when I do his nails. Always follow up with a good belly rub, then he will associate getting his nails clipped with something positive.
Re: When he's at home and relaxed
i've tried to grab his paws here at home and he "nibbles" at my hand, but what i experienced today at the salon i've never seen. they didn't cut into the quick but he just does not like the nail clippers. so you say to give him treats and lots of praise, will try and hope next visit is much safer. thanks

When he's at home and relaxed
slowly start touching his feet. Lots good treats and praise as you go. Get him comfortable with his feet being handled and that should help. =)

as a groomer what i do......
i now keep peanut butter on hand....and when the rotties and bulls come in you know their is going to be alot of fussing...so one person holds a spoon of peanut butter and one does the nails....some dogs jump on the table and wait for their peanut butter.....they cant do two things AT once and eating is a favorite of both breeds and who does not like peanut butter....

I'm a groomer
and clients are always amazed at how quickly I do nails

Cash's brother Virgil comes in for his nails about once a month - I started the whole litter with nail trims from birth using both dremel & clippers. Cash will stand nicely for his nails ( I do them weekly with the dremel ) Virgil hates having his done and complains a lot. His owner took him to another groomer and also had the vet do them and she thinks he had a bad experience there.
Now he comes only to me for his nails, plays with Cash for about 30-50 minutes before the trim and then he gets up on the table for his nails. He used to struggle but now he's to the point where he will behave if he's comfortable. He likes to sit while I do them and I do still get some complaints but with consistancy and making it all a good experience he improves with every visit.
It's important to find someone you trust and ideally someone who will teach you how to do it at home since thats where he's most comfortable & really, nail trimming isn't difficult
