Got Dozer's allergy test results back....food ingredient question

I don't have the entire report in my hand yet, but I just got off the phone with the vet. The big food triggers for Dozer are carrots, pork, soybean, white potato, peanut, and alfalfa. Of course the last 2 foods we tried had at least one of these as an ingredient. The most recent food we tried was Canidae grain free, which contains white potatoes and alfalfa meal. As I've been reading through ingredient lists I'm getting more and more confused. If Dozer is allergic to potato, I'm assuming we need to avoid foods that list potatoe protein and potatoe fiber. Is that right? Also, I noticed all the the canidae foods list sun cured alfalfa meal. Would alfalfa meal be the same as regular alfalfa? The vet said in any dog with food allergies, he also tries to avoid beef, wheat, and corn. He suggested Purina ProPlan selects natural turkey and barley. When I read the ingredients it lists corn gluten meal, but stresses that there is no ground corn. Does that mean the corn gluten is OK? Thanks for any help!

Can't get it

I was so bummed to find out we can't get Go! Natural locally. According to their website, there was one store that carried it, but when I called they said they are no longer able to order it from their distributor. I ended up getting a bag of Wellness white fish and sweet potato for Dozer to try. Right now he's on NB venison and sweet potato, but it also contains white potato, which he's allergic to so I wanted to start weaning him off of it as soon as possible. Thanks again for the advice!

Looks good!

Thanks for the suggestion, Michele. This looks like one Dozer could eat! I'm going to the pet store this morning to see if they have it. I'll let you know how it goes happy.gif

Re: Got the report

Call Spectrum labs and ask them to send a food list to you. Or ask your vet for it. As at the clinic I work at Spectrum sends the list with the report. I know I called them about Charlie when I wanted to give him somthing. I called at least once a year for a up dated list of foods. You have all The information as to his test number for spectrum on your report.

Thanks

I looked into it and the food was looking so good until I saw carrots. I wish he could have that because it sounds like a really healthy food. Carrots seem to be very popular all the sudden!

Hooch is allergic to many of the same things plus

chicken, lamb and duck. We feed him Go Natural Salmon & Oatmeal dry (he gets constipated on grain free) and Ziwi Peak Venison & Fish canned. IT is a nigthmare trying to find GOOD food without all of the items he's allergic to so I feel for you! Email me anytime if you want to discuss allergies. hooch is also very allergic to dust mites, weeds, trees and grass.

Re: Got Dozer's allergy test results back....food ingredient que

I swear by Newman's Own organic food.

I use both the dry and canned varieties and he has no skin, hair or tear stain issues. Not sure if it is free of the allergens you listed but I think it is worth looking into. It is also reasonably priced considering it is of high quality, organic and human grade ingredients.

Good luck!

Got the report

Okay, I have the report now. Spectrum uses numers...150-199 is borderline, 200+ is positive. Dozer scored 258 on white potatoes, 231 on carrots, & 238 on alfalfa. I'm just confused on if potatoe fiber means white potatoes and is a no no. I just got back from the pet store, and Natural Balance lamb meal and brown rice didn't have any of those ingredients. The fish and sweet potato said potato fiber, so I'm not sure on that one. I also found Wellness allergy formula, which is white fish and sweet potato, and that also had none of the ingredients he's alleric to. I'm going to do some reading on those tonight and then we'll make a decision. If anyone has experience with these foods, I'd love to hear your feedback. Dozer has been on NB sweet potato and venison but we found it also listed potato as an ingredient. I also gives him BAD gas. He even gets up and moves it smells so bad.

I couldn't get over how many entire brands of food were ruled out by 1 indredient...all TOW listed potato, Eagle all had carrot, Canidae all had potato. Yikes.

Of course his two worst allergens are bluegrass (284) and rye grass (275). Our yard is a mix of bluegrass and rye sad.gif I guess that explains the hives all over his poor little feet.

Thanks again for all the help!

wait until you get your report

it will tell you how allergic by *'s or atleast the ones i have seen. Very allergic is like 5*'s and slight allergic is 1*.

when you look at a lable, the foods that are farther away from teh beginning of the food list or down farther mean they have less of that food then the ones above it.

You might have to choose a food that has some allergens but not the 5 *'s

you might look at natural balance fish and sweat potatoe

Sweet Potatoes, Salmon, Salmon Meal, Canola Oil, Potato Fiber, Natural Flavor, Salmon Oil (a source of DHA), Flaxseed, Potassium Chloride, Methionine, Choline Chloride, Natural Mixed Tocopherols, Taurine, Vitamin E Supplement, Iron Proteinate, Zinc Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Potassium Iodide, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B-1), Manganese Proteinate, Manganous Oxide, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Supplement, Biotin, Calcium Pantothenate, Manganese Sulfate, Sodium Selenite, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B-6), Vitamin B-12 Supplement, Riboflavin (Vitamin B-2), Vitamin D-3 Supplement, Folic Acid.
