Food, paw licking and ear infections

Hello,
I used to frequent BDW in the past, but because of some tragedies it's been awhile.

I have 4 bullies (2 boys and 2 girls) and a pug. I'm playing the food game and wondering if I will ever find one food that would suit the whole crew.

I've found success with Canidae but can only get it by mail order, which ends up being expensive and inconvenient. Wellness was great but my girls got diarrhea, same with California Natural. Now I've switched to Eagle Pack and one of my girls has starting licking her paws, which are now turning red.
One of my boys started doing the same thing on the California Natural, but not quite as bad. The other two are having ear flare ups.

The boys have been on CN and I was going to switch them to Eagle Pack for simplicity, but now I'm thinking of changing from Eagle Pack to stop the licking.

Any advice? BTW, I usually get the lamb and rice varieties, they don't get people food except for my pizza crust every once in awhile, and only get natural treats.

Thanks~Dawn

I would say try....

the Natural Balance for a few months. It will take that long to get everything bad out of his system. Use it along with Benedryl for a while to control the itchies. I have heard you can use Zyrtec also (instead of the Benedryl). Either way, give the food a chance to work right....don't get frustrated and change again for at least 3 months...that is long enough to know if it works or not:-)

Best luck to you...it is frustrating...I know very well about that!

I have treid several high end foods.

The only one to work for both of my girls, who have completely different needs, is Natural Balance Limited INgredients. My Sophia has allergies and so far this is the only food that keeps her comfortable and not so itchy. Isabella has SB and gets loose stools on every other food, but NB gets her solid in literally a day:-) Both girls have soft, shiny coats, and both love the food.

I have tried:
Taste Of The Wild, did ok but had allergies.
Wellness Super5Mix Adult Large Breed, did ok but had itchies start up again and couldn't get Isabella to harden up in the stool department:-)
Royal Canin Bulldogs 24, which we fed for two years until they changed the formula. Sophie did excellent on it, and I wish they hadn't changed it because I would still be faithfully on it:-)

I have tried all the food and found Orijen to work

I had bought this for my 2 frenchies due to allergy problems, but then my bulldog got to their food bowl one day and he won't eat the NB duck and potatoes or TOTW pacific stream. I have noticed that all are doing great, soft shiny coats, and best off all they are no longer licking their paws, or redness in between the toes and no itchy ears either. the only problem is that they tend to have more gas on this food, but I can live with that if all else is good. Mine eat the Orijen chicken, they don't like the Orijen salmon. They do sell in trial size bags at $1.99 or 2.49 and you could try your furkids on that and see how it works.

Re: Food, paw licking and ear infections

A really good food to try if you haven't already is Natural Balance Fish and Potato. It is an "allergy free" food. They also have Duck and Potato and Venison and Potato but it was apparently too rich for him and he had very soft stools. He has done great on the Fish and Potato and was recommended by my veterinary dermatologist. If dogs are really foot lickers and the feet turn red, there is probably some ingredient in the food that is causing this. Years ago we had a bitch with beautiful white feet. We were feeding Iams at the time and her feet started to turn red. We switched food and it went away. At the time we used Eagle Pack with great results. But for the past 12 years I have been using the Natural Balance. Another food to try is Kangaroo and Oat, but the only problem with that is you have to get it from a vet and it can be costly, where the Natural Balance you can buy from food stores.
I hope this helps you. Dealing with environmental allergy issues is difficult to treat.

I have some quesitons about this too

I have eight dogs.  All of them are on California Natural Salmon and Stweet Potato.  Their ears are good, except one of the shar-pei, she always has chronic ear infections.  One of the females is licking her feet and they are red, her eyes are red too, and her throat is swollen to the point where I just had her evaluated for soft palate surgery.  I am not compketely convinced that she isn't allergic to her food, but I think more it is environmental issues htat are bothering her.  The proten from her food (herring) is nominal and therefore I don't know what else to try.  They can't eat chicken at all or lamb, have tried venison, duck, bison, the only protein source I haven't tried is rabbit.

Thank you...

for the advice and opinions. I'm hopeful that one of these foods will help us get rid of these issues.

Yep, this just seems to be the best food for my girls too.

Hi Jacinda...I switched the girls back to NB Venison and Sweet Potato. Will NOT change them off it again for any other food! Sophie just looks so much better, and has so much LESS licking and itchies:-)

I wish Isabella would get out from under my desk and quite licking my knees and shins:-) !!! (ha ah! A little real time action there for ya)!

Question?

I am feeding my bully the California Natural Fish and Sweet Potato. Is the Natural Balance a better food or similar? Buford seems to be doing ok on the Calif Nat- he has soft stool every so often and itches occasionally but nothing major.

I used to feed Eagle Pack...noticing corn in some of

the forumulas now??? Not sure if that is new but I know it wasn't in the fish one we fed over a year ago. We feed Go Natural now with California Natural canned.
