Food Or Seasonal Allergies?

Gus has always had seasonal allergies, but recently within the past 3-4 days it has gotten worse. Normally he would lick his paws and scratch; we would give him benedryl and he would settle. We recently changed his food to NB vension LID.

He is now soo uncomfortbale and has hive like bumps (raised fur) all over. What are the chances it is the food? We bathed him in calm coat oatmeal shampoo and sprayed him with the calm coat spray, given him benedryl and although it helps a bit, a few hours later he is goinf nutz scratching.

Is there anything else I can give him to help?

Re: Food Or Seasonal Allergies?

Dozer has had an awful time with hives this spring. The vet told us it has been a very bad spring for dogs with outdoor allergies. We've had to resort to prednisone as well. It's the only thing that gives him any relief from the itching and swelling.

Thanks for the responses

it was really bad last night, I gave him 5 mg of prednizone. The bumps went away very quickly and he has a restful sleep. I am withholding all treats, in hopes that they wont re occur.

Steroids would help

Hives will make him very uncomfortable. Allergies are really tough to find the cause as I am sure you know.

Nikki, I have a Boxer who has terrible allergies...has had hives

as a matter-of-fact, she had hives terribly bad when she ate a few potato chips! Benadryl wasn't even touching her allergies. Our vet told us to use Tavist D instead of Benadryl and it worked. Please check with your vet before you use anything other than what he has told you to use because all dogs are different. I just wanted to let you know what worked for us.

Good Luck!
