Hi, I'm David. My wife Christine and I are new bully "parents", and loving it! Our Roxy is 14 weeks old, and we are enjoying her more than either of us ever imagined we could.
We've noticed that Roxy tends to gulp her food down very quickly. We feed her 1 cup 3 times daily. She is fed in a very quiet room with no other animals or people present. So no real reason for the rush other than being a pup, I guess. She doesn't seem to be experiencing any issues due to the gulping (other than occasional hiccups), but we'd like to avoid any in future, so we're looking for tips on how to slow her down.
By the way, I would like to say that this forum is great. We did a lot of research on bullies before we even approached a breeder. But we have been looking through the posts on this forum for the past few days, and we've learned more from this forum than from all our other research. It's very helpful to become familiar with many of the various bulldog issues by reading the stories of the people and dogs that have actually experienced them. We feel like we will be much better prepared if we have an issue of our own.
Thanks in advance for your tips!
David, Christine, and Roxy
try a durapet slow feed bowl
This helps. The design of the bowl makes them slow down while eating. I have a little girl who bloats. Also you can try and spead the food out over a cookie sheet, and make the pup "search" fpr the food.

Thanks for the kind words and tips...
...we'll give some of those things a try. She was microchipped by the breeder, and all appropriate paperwork went to the CKC, so I think we're good to go!

I agree, we need to really enjoy them while they're young, just like all the rest of our children.
Thanks again!

Re: Food Gulping
Our bulldog Dink is 8 months and still tries to gulp his food, but I purchased a ball from the petstore that you place in their food bowl. He has to eat around it and it's seemed to slow him down quite a bit. I bought the largest one because I had a fear of him trying to put it in his mouth to play with it, but we havn't had any such problems and its dishwasher safe!~ Congrats on your new addition =]

Cute puppy!
I agree with Lynn...you can try spreading around the kibble on an 'edged cookie sheet' or you can purchase one of those stainless bowls that has a raised center (like a donut) that requires her to take a bit more care in diving into he bowl. Stainless is the way to go, especially while she is a pup, so she doesn't become afraid to see a reflection in the steel, or become overly-sensitive to temperature changes in the bowl. The only problem I've seen with these is if the dog wears any kind of metal "tag" that extends from a collar which would "clink" on the metal bowl and be upsetting/distracting. I don't recommend keeping a collar on a dog while they are inside the house anyway but if you have people coming in/out frequently to where the pup can inadvertently escape then you need to keep some ID on your pup. I hope you have had her microchipped, or plan to do so in the next day or so! It doesn't prevent theft but it makes return so much more likely...and remember to send in the registration half of your paperwork that comes with the microchip! Too many people forget about this part...I know, I've worked with rescue for many years. Enjoy your little one...they do grow quickly.

Congrats on the pup
Roxy is adorable.
You can try spreading her food out on a cookie pan or place a large rock in her dish, she will have to eat around it so it slows them down a little.
Good luck. My guys gulp their food also, thankfully, we haven't had any problems.
