hatcheries? Isnt mercury a problem with Ocean fish and other large bodies that connect somehow...

I watched this thing on the hirtory channel a while back and they said they send so much of thier fish for dog and cat food. I was so grossed out because you dont even want to know what fish they send to the dog food companies...eww it mad me sad.

and it doesnt really make sense since Fish based food is high in Omega 3's and would benifit the animal. BUT I have heard of people pulling thier dog off fish based foods because they dont feel its safe due to the chemical and additives used in fish hatcheries. (if you have ever watched it on the history channel its actually pretty gross)

Cleft palate is a midlines closure/neural tube problem. No one really knows what causes it or the other problems related to it (SB, Spinal abnormalities etc) Some cases have been linked to antibiotics prior to pregnancy, steroids such as pred 3 months prior to whelp. BUT BCA has been trying to direct those who have had these issues to send in DNA samples to the study for further research to try and find a genetic link. Hopefully in years to come we will have some answers.

My vet's research says the whole clef palate/split lip/narrow trachea thing is linked to a genetic recessive trait. If this keeps cropping up in your pairings, one should change the bitch or the stud to one that does not have that trait in their offspring. Bitches make their own folic acid so they don't deal with the deficiencies like people do according to the experts. One thing they said is that if you use trimethoprim sulfa antibiotic you can cause problems with their production of folic acid. The other thing is if on a really poor quality food you can have problems.
