I found out one of my coworkers used specturm labs 3 years ago for her dog. She also paid close to $300 using a different vet than we used. I'm really curious why their cost is so much higer than VARL, but at this point, I'm willing to pay just about anything to get Dozer some relief.

Sorry to hear your dog tested positive to so many things. I have a feeling Dozer will, too. He's gotten a lot worse now that spring is here, but we battled this all winter as well. I just know he's going to be allergic to our cat and to grass because he LOVES to be outside. Were you able to control the allergies with diet and enviromental modifications, or did you have to use the allergy shots?

Spectrum labs charges a flat rate price The vets can charge what ever they want over that price I paid $153 in 1999 and poor Charlie my rescue was pos or boarder line to 58 out of the 95 things tested

Charlie was bad he got a shot once a month once he got to that point we had to start him out at .2 cc of the serum till we got to the max dose. His diet was a dog food with fish and potato in it as it was the ony thing he could have. Spectrum will sent a list of all the foods and treats they can have. Also you can call them and ask if a product you want to try is ok for your dog. Carrot bones came out in 2000 I belive and I called to see if they were ok to give Charlie and they check his file and said yes and sent me a update on his food list We rescued Charlie in 1998 (december) he was 2 1/2 yrs. A champion too . He lived to be 12 1/2 almost 13 and a good life. The money you will spend will be well worth the cost. The testing cost $308, but the receipt I got wasn't itemized. I'm sure this also included a small charge from the vet for the blood draw. Spectrum's fees were pretty close to the estimate I had gotten for the VARL testing. Good luck with your fosters...these allergies are miserable to deal with. I've been told this year is worse than ususal.

Thanks for letting me know the spectrum testing worked well for you. I'm so glad to hear postive things about them. I can't wait to get the results and finally know for sure what we need to do for Dozer.

The specialist we saw in Lansing, MI had never heard of those but knew of VARL. Our breeder in IL also knew of VARL. I was starting to feel like I would never get the testing done! As long as I get results that will help Dozer, I'll be happy

I'm not sure if the lady just wasn't sure of the price or if there are things specific to each dog that can affect the cost. I should have added that the vet I had to take Dozer to locally for the Spectrum testing is known to be one of the pricer vets in our area, so he may have charged more than other vets will charge.
