feeding

I have a 2 and a half year old male bully. because of my schedule it works out that i feed him once a day in the evning 2 cups of dry food. He seems to be doing well. do i need to feed hom more or less amount and is it ok to just feed once a day

Thanks

mine all eat before potty..

Belle will often have to run for the door as she gobbles her last morsel of kibble. She usually makes it, but she will sometimes drop an egg or two.

Haha, Ester sounds just like Roxie

She is waiting for her food and eats even before she heads out to potty unless she really has to go. They only get 1/2 cup of kibble in the morning but she is hungry.

Mackenzie has to actually be encouraged to come eat in the morning.

I too feel bad just feeding once a day.

Wow. Roxy is up breathing in my face at 6AM

get up MOM and feed me!!!

Isn't it interesting how different they all are. I guess we all do what works best for us and our dogs. Nobody knows your dogs better than you.

I have to agree with Lynn and Elaine on this issue.

I just don't think once a day is healthy for the digestive system and body in general. In the wild, wolves, coyotes, and wild dogs will eat several times a day if they are able to. They eat small animals, bugs, grass and greens on occasion, and I can't imagine they do that just to snack a little:-) I believe it is to keep their energy levels up and keep their digestive system/body running well. While we don't have wild dogs (!) I still believe the same feeding system should be in place to keep everything up and running the right way:-)

I am trying charlie on free feeding..he is 5 mnths old.. he does not go crazy for his food like my old bullies did.. he takes a bit then leave it.. and take more when he is hungry..I prefer this behavour over the food is finally here it it quick then beg till next meal deal.
If/when he developes a weight problem then I will try the 2 feedings..

How can going from stuffed to starving be good for a dog?

I can't think of any reason to feed a dog only once a day other than convenience for the one feeding the dog.

We humans are told it is bad for our metabolism to starve and stuff because it makes sugar levels spike and fall. Why is this any different for a dog?

I couldn't find any online info to support or dispute my feelings. I just know how hungry my dogs are in the morning and at dinner time. I don't think they would be any less hungry for dinner if I fed them 2 cups of kibble in the AM.

Maybe my dogs are just little foodie fatties. LOL

I'm with you, Lynn..

our dogs don't live in the wild where they have to hunt for food and go without for days at a time. I see no reason or benefit to feeding once a day.

As I said, I think dogs are pretty adaptable. And altho they have been domesticated for ages they did derive from the wild and are basically carnivores. Their digestive system is much different from ours--much less intestine, for example. They can also tolerate and digest things that would give us alot of trouble. Carnivores in the wild are use to "gorge and starve". Thankfully our domesticated and spoiled couch potatoes have a lot easier life--my husband says that if there is reincarnation he wants to come back as one of my dogs!

i feed 1 x per day

give him a few bones in the AM so he doesnt have empty stomach all day.

How much food depends on how fat/skinny he is.

Maybe it's just my dogs

My dogs don't free feed, they get meals, twice a day. I can't believe that giving the entire daily portion at one feeding is not harder on their digestive system. Whenever my dogs have been sick, the vet always has me feed several small meals daily because its less stress/work for the digestive system. Personally, I can't imagine eating only once a day.

Maybe I should have said, "Little Fattie Foodies" LOL

they like to eat. Actually, they live to eat. I never have to sweep my kitchen.

Bloat

Not all dogs will bloat. You can do the exact wrong things with 2 dogs and one might bloat and the other won't. Some dogs will bloat even if you do everything right. I usually work with my dogs in the morning when it is cool. By afternoon when I feed they have been "chilling out". Again if they are going to have any sort of exercise it will be in the evening after it has cooled--long after their feeding time. I don't tbink it is the quantity that necessarily causes bloat (even with one feeding there still isn't much in those bowls--not as if they have gotten into a bag and gorged.) Frankly one of the best things you can do if you are worried about bloat is pre-soak those kibbles. It is amazing how much water the kibble can hold--all you got to do is look at them after they have been in the dog's stomach for awhile and he has vomited--gross) There is also an extra benefit to soaking the kibble--if your dog is a poor water drinker it is a way of getting lots of extra water into the dog. Plus if your dog seems always to be hungry it is a good way to fill them up. Of course they need to pee a lot more. Always seems to be a bad with the good.

Exactly!

I give him a treat after his morning business and then he's the same as yours. Not too active before 2 pm and actually he RUNS in from outside to go back to bed. lol. He's in the bedroom before I can even get the leash off. He's getting lazier the older he gets.

Happy birthday again to your sweet Bosco. He's such a cute guy.

I hate to throw away food

most of mine dont even open their eyes until after 12. They get a bisket but many times they are still on the floor or in the bed at dinner time.

Elaine, I agree. I would worry about bloat

too much food in their stomach all at once. We feed twice a day.

Somtimes I wish

Onslow was like that. It's so easy to train them if they are fixated on food. =)

I do wonder how bad it is for bloat to only feed them once though. Like you said there is no firm answer either way.

sounds like our Teddy.

Junior lives to eat and eat and eat. Nothing makes him more happy than food.

interesting..

mine do gobble their food and look for more. Especially Junior and Belle. I have occasionally accidentally fed one dog or another two breakfasts and it didn't make them any less hungry for dinner.

Teddy couldn't care less about food. He would probably be fine eating one meal a day. He wouldn't eat at all if he was free fed.

Junior would eat until he popped.

Believe me Elaine

I used to put it out for him in the morning and evening only to throw the morning portion away. As I said above he is (food pre-measured) free fed so he is free to eat whenever he likes.

My dog is not very food oriented at all and he sure isn't starving either. LOL He eats to live not lives to eat.

1x vs 2x/day

I have fed 2x/day for years. The dogs were always so eager to get their bowl that I felt it would be cruel to only feed them once per day. However, most of my dogs are very easy keepers and there was very little in their bowls. The first would be finished and looking for more before the last was even fed. Various circumstances caused me to try feeding once a day. I started with giving the dogs the same amount in their bowl that they would receive for the day. It didn't take long before I noticed that almost all of them slowed down on their eating--they don't gulp the food as if it is their last meal. In fact a couple even leave food in their bowls. I have been able to cut the fatties down and they don't act so deprived. I usually feed around 2-3PM. However everone does get a couple of biscuits in the AM when they get up and in the PM at bedtime--which is an added bonus for them. None are doing that "empty stomach yellow bile vomit". The dogs will adjust to whatever feeding schedule you prefer but mine seem to do better and like the fact that once a day they are actually "full".
