eye problems--ulcers and scratches
Submitted by omegabulldogs on April 21, 2010 - 12:08amseem to be a big problem with a lot of the Bullies on BDW and I think with Bullies in general. I know I have had my share of dealing with them. I just want to point out one cause that maybe is overlooked--dew claws. I know with our breed the dew claws are not removed as they are in a lot of other breeds. Well I had one girl that seemed to be constantly getting an eye ulcer. She had to have her eye sewn shut 3 times before the age of 2. I did notice that she rubbed her face a lot with her paw--kind of cute--like a cat cleaning itself. Finally realized it wasn't so cute--she was scratching her eye with her dew claw. So about the time she turned 2 I had her spayed and had her dew claws removed at the same time. She is 11 now and has never had another eye ulcer. Just something for you all to watch for if you have a Bullie who repeatedly gets an eye ulcer and you can't figure out how.

Corky has on occassion scratched her
eye with a dew claw. I have taped the dew claw down with surgical tape. Works great. You have to replace often if they chew it off, but Corky got used to it.

Stanley got one and we could not really figure out why. It happened when spring came and he had some allergies when they first started cutting the grass and whatnot and I think he was rubbing with his paw and kept hitting his eye with the claw.

seems everyone here is having eye issues at my home. Started with the rescues, now my own. Mia had an ulcer about 6 months ago. Had the eye stained, it was small and treated with tobramycin. All got better. Now again she is having issues with that same eye so I am taking her back in.
My problems arise from her rubbing her face against everything though. She scratches hr head against the stucco of our home, the prickly doormats outside, you name it. So I need to find out why she is doing this. I am beginning to think its an allergy to something we have around here...maybe?
I have a cone on her now as well to prevent her from scratching the eye, and am using BNP in the eye.
It all really is a hassle because cone heads done fit through doggie doors! LOL! So everyone is having to be lead out the door to potty which means i am home 24/7 right now..or if i leave i am using potty pads which everyone is trained to use..
