Eye Problems

My 7 mo. old bully Finnie, has been having eye issues lately. His first issue happened almost 3 weeks ago - cherry eye which popped back in. Last week - conjunctivitis, and this week - the white part of his eye had a lump and was swollen. Low and behold, the neurotic new parent of Finnie that I am, I brought him to the vet. He has allergies. They said they couldn't figure out what he was allergic to. But of course, seeing him with his eyes swollen alarms me. Anyone have any insight as to what he may be allergic to, how to prevent it, and how does your bully respond to Benadryl, which is what they told me to give him next time. THANKS!

does the vet have experience with bulldogs?

you may want to find a vet that specializes. Did they do an eye strip test at all? Sounds like they need to do more work to find out what the issue is.
In the mean time try flushing his eyes daily with Clear Eyes eyewash solution and try to get more answers from the vet happy.gif

I agree that flushing the eye with artificial tears

(nothing that says "gets the red out") will cause extra ease in blinking and (partially)washing out some floating irritants which will be a problem for the next few months! Some bullies are sensitive to allergies related to plants and trees and the Springtime is very stressful for them. Before you just pickup some human allergy eye drops, check with your veterinarian as not all products are suitable for use on canines...but perhaps something in this vein will ease some of the worst symptoms of redness and itchy/watery eyes, used concurrent (10mins apart) to artificial tears. Sometimes it may appear that the dog needs entropion surgery (correction of eyelid placement) but its only a temporary swelling due to allergy-response, so having a vet very experienced with this breed is important!

Also, I'm not a vet, but sometimes conjunctivitis-appearing redness in the eye is not actually an infection, but allergy-response...but of course a lot of rubbing can in fact, cause some infection in the eye. In those cases, a combo product of eye antibiotic and eye steroid medication should ease the situation (presuming no ulcer present). HTH
