Experienced Breeder's Please Help - New Puppy Checklist ?....and New Puppy Questions

Hi!

Would any experienced breeders/obedience show folks have a new puppy checklist they can send me? I am about to pick-up our very first Bulldog puppy and want to make sure I have everything on hand that I need. And here are a few questions:

1) I will be crate training....what type/size of crate do you recommend?
2) What type of brush is best for Bulldogs?
3) What type of collar do you use for obedience training? (I have shown Labs up through CDX, but I don't know if there is a more preferred collar-type used on a Bullydogs neck.)
4) What are the top two recommended foods for Bulldog puppies?
5) What type of bed do you prefer (for times when he is out of his crate)?
6) What type of shampoo is good for puppies? (I've heard Maliceb, but want to be sure.)
7) What is your favorite grooming table and where do I purchase one?
8) What do you use for wrinkle maintenance?
9) What do you put on their nose to keep it healthy?

I raised Labrador Retrievers and showed them years ago, but seeing as Bulldogs are special, I want to make sure I am well-prepared with all of the necessities. Lot's of shopping to do! happy.gif If there's anything I've missed, please feel free to add.

Thank you so much in advance for your help.

Re: Experienced Breeder's Please Help - New Puppy Checklist ?...

1) I will be crate training....what type/size of crate do you recommend? One they can go in and have just enough room to turn around in.
2) What type of brush is best for Bulldogs? i use a regular brush
3) What type of collar do you use for obedience training? (I have shown Labs up through CDX, but I don't know if there is a more preferred collar-type used on a Bullydogs neck.) I personally don't use a collar i find it rubs down the fur around the neck. I use a mendota leash which has a martingale collar built in.
4) What are the top two recommended foods for Bulldog puppies? There are a million you have to find one that works for your dog. What works great for mine might not work great for yours. Alot of people use taste of the wild, Natural Balance,Blue Buffalo
5) What type of bed do you prefer (for times when he is out of his crate)? Alot of people do not use them because for some reason bulldog puppies love to pee on them
6) What type of shampoo is good for puppies? (I've heard Maliceb, but want to be sure.) Tearless puppy shampoo. Maleseb is if they have skin issues.
7) What is your favorite grooming table and where do I purchase one?
8) What do you use for wrinkle maintenance? Baby wipes unscented with aloe
9) What do you put on their nose to keep it healthy? Bag Balm

Good luck with you new puppy

I don`t show, or obedience, but

I use a bowser bed for my guy as well as his crate (medium). It is 36"x21"

I used a martingale collar for obedience training then a buddy belt harness after that when he had learned his manners. (he is very good)

I use bag balm on the nose quite frequently, washing it off with a facecloth then more bag balm.

I clean, then dry wrinkles and apply extra strength zincofax careful to avoid his eyes. This is almost daily and I find it prevents tear stains, either that or he is just not prone to them.

Enjoy your pup.

I am saddened to see the buddy belt harness is no longer being manufactured. I looked at their website today.
Another sign of these unpredictable times.

I am in Toronto Canada

I get extra strength zincofax in Shoppers Drug Mart baby section. The extra strength has a higher percentage of zinc 40%.
The buddy belt harness was invented by a Toronto girl who wanted something for brachycephalic breeds like ours where there would not be any pull on the trachea. It is very well made, leather, leather lined, various sizes, and colours. If I was smart enough to post a pic, you would see how lovely Mr. Higgins looks in his red one. He is a lovely dark red brindle/white with the sweetest face you have ever seen. I am not at all biased.
There is a web site for the buddy belt harness.

Not a breeder but...

I've had 4 bullie puppies over the years.

The crate should be just big enough for them to turn around in. You can purchase a bigger crate with a divider in the middle so you can use it as they get older.

I use a furminator brush but only a couple times a week.

I use a maringale collar for obedience training.

I feed my puppy whatever food the breeder was using for a few weeks. Then, I switch to a premium all stage formula. Bulldog puppies don't really need puppy food. I have used Taste of the Wild pacific stream and I'm currently using Nature's Variety Venison.

My dogs have several beds and they like to sleep on the couch.

I use regular Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo on my puppies. I've used a variety of shampoos as they get older. My favorites are Tropiclean and Zymox.

Grooming tables can be purchases at www.petedge.com or www.groomers.com

For wrinkles, I clean them with unscented baby wipes a couple times a week and dry well. Overcleaning is just as bad as not cleaning enough in my opinion. The objective is to keep the wrinkles as dry as possible. If the wrinkles start to look irritated, I apply diaper rash cream.

I think Aquaphor works great on noses.
