Ever since we got Daisy she's had "itchy ears". She rubs them on the walls and the carpets. Every time the vet checks her out they always say she's ok...no infections, and they rarely clean them out, they usually leave them alone. We definitely don't want to try to clean them ourselves just because of how shallow dogs ears are.
Today my husband looked into her ear past the fold. he says there's a lot of dark goop in there and that's what's making her itch. We've made an appt to get her ears looked at ASAP, but is there any way to control the wax buildup? Can this be an allergy or is this just natural?
itchy ears no more
Our boy Herschel came with a really bad yeasty ear infection when we adopted him. You may want to ask your vet about Zymox if you need to treat an ear infection. It's great stuff; you just squirt it into the ears every day for about two weeks with NO daily cleaning and it clears right up. It is enzyme based and very effective, but not all vets use it (exotic bully meds I guess).
Also, we discovered that Herschel had inner ear environmental allergies and put him on Hydroxizine which has totally stopped all the itching. Our vet said he could be allergic to almost anything - dust, etc. We figured this out beacuse even though his ears were clean and not infected he still kept rubbing his ears raw.
Make sure you keep the ears clean. Dirty ears are not the same as yeasty ears. We use Epiotic cleanser and clean about twice a week. I do use q-tips (VERY CAREFULLY with my vet's guidence and blessings) to get any wax down in the canal. Hersch just doesn't go for big 'ol cotton balls. Have your vet show you the best way to clean out the ears.
Good Luck!
8n1 ear powder...
I have had more success with a dry powder than a liquid. Moist=yeast. This stuff has worked fabulous for my gang.
I used to clean out the ears every 4-5 days now I can go 1-2 weeks. Its awesome stuff and cheap!!!
It's not wax, it's a yeast infection
Does it smell gross and look brown and smooshy?
Em
It's probably a yeast infection. Some ottomax or animax should clear it up. But, you can use a 50/50 vinegar and water solution with a cotton ball and q-tip until you can get to the vets.

Re: Excessive Ear "Wax"?
if it is dark brown almost black it could be ear mites. No matter how often you clean they will come back. if it is ear mites you need to buy a ear mite cleaner. if not buy regular ear cleaner and use daily till ears are clean.
Ear cleaning
If you own a bulldog you need to know how to clean ears.It should be part of your weekly routine and sometimes more often. Dogs ear canals are not shallow they are shaped like a L. Anything you can hurt is at the bottom of the L ( ear drum ect..). Get yourself a good ear cleaner at your vets and have them show you how to clean them. It is not hard to do and there a many types of cleaners. I use chlorhexaderm scrub and flush out with water at there bath each week.Do not use q tips in there ears ever you may cause a problem if you do. Good luck.
