Discharge?

Hi,

Anyone know why my boy Diesel might be having green thick discharge after urinating? Do they get kidney infections. He seems fine but he has been eating a lot of grass. I have a full 5 day dose of Baytril antibiotics. Thinking of giving it to him. Anybody deal with this before?

Thanks,

Lauren

It is right after and only after he urinates

I will try that thanks

I did try to wipe with a cloth, just to gather some of the fluid so I could see color and thickness but I didn't try water. Wasn't sure if that would be OK. I will do that this morning.

Might be localized "infection" in the shaft covering the penis

this is fairly common and the best way to handle it...gently...is to bathe him with luke-warm water and a diluted gentle antibacterial soap followed by careful and complete rinsing...or using a syringe of a diluted chlorhexidine solution to flush this sheath or "pocket" a couple times. If you are unsure if this discharge is coming from "inside" the dog or from "outside the penis" but inside the covering, then gently start at the base and draw your looped fingers forward toward the tip and some discharge will likely come out. Obviously you don't want to put anything inside the penis itself!!! Its just the shaft that I'm suggesting you cleanse. If the discharge is coming from the penis itself, and is recurring several times a day, or has odor, see your vet. Usually a UTI discharge will not be 'thick'...and if the dog was shooting sperm, I think you would know.

If you're uncomfortable doing this cleansing yourself...and remember that the penis should have some natural moisture in order to glide in/out the sheath, and some K-Y Jelly can provide that natural-type moisture, then you can visit your vet or perhaps the technician can describe how to do the cleansing they recommend.
