demodex question

cooper was diagnosed with demodex about a month ago (on his cheek). i caught it right away & my vet suggested trying promeris top spot treatment. it looked better after only a few days, but yesterday i noticed some red bumps on his other cheek! i put the second promeris on him last night even though he wasn't due to have it till monday. does anyone have any suggestions on what to do different? or is this normal? i've been giving him fish oil pills & vitamins to help his immune system.

More questions about Demodex

My puppy Tiller, is being treated with Promeris for Demodex. He has a pretty severe case and his hair is falling out on his back. I have taken him to the vet and they say it is "normal" to see this kind of hair loss. Im not sure. Will his hair eventually grow back, his coat is starting to show some bald spots. Is there anything else I should be doing?

Depends if the Promeris is "enough" or if some other

medication is needed, such as the Mitaban Dip (a stronger yet still diluted Amitraz product). Yes, often there seems to be some worsening with early Mange treatment before things turn around and it gets better (ie, no new outbreaks) but it can take a couple months for the fur to completely grow back. Usually the vet's notes from the initial skin scraping will give an approx number of mites seen on one view of the slide made from the scraping...and then subsequent scrapings are compared as to number of mites found in the field of vision, and whether they are alive/active or dead/dying. Scrapings are usually done about 3 weeks after treatment, and about 3-4 week intervals after that.

promeris is

a monthly flea & tick medication you put on the back of the neck like frontline. it has amitraz in it (which others don't) & that is the ingredient used in alot of the dips for demodex. i guess it's a new treatment idea for demodex. it seemed to work after a couple of days the first time i put it on him. i noticed the redness was gone & his skin wasn't bumpy. he is not on any antibiotics yet because we caught it right away & my vet didn't think there were any other skin problems yet. the new red bumps are on the other side of his face from where thre first bumps were. i read that the cheeks are a very common place for demodex on puppies. i'm assuming it just flared up again? this is my first experience with demodex so i don't know what to expect.

i was scared

to use it at first, but he did fine. i've read some bad things about it, but unfortunately not until after the first dose. i'll take him to the vet next week & get another scrape done to be sure. thanks!

I guess I should clarify...

I know what Promeris is and I know about it for demodex. I wasn't clear if you where putting it directly on the demodex spots or where applying it as directed alng the back of the neck. You should be taking the dog in for monthly skin scrapes to check the progress and see if there are any mites or not. If you have only done one application, this still may be part on the initial break out phase, but most likely you are dealing with a secondary infection and need to talk to your vet about a course of treatment for that, like antibiotics. Best of luck to you and from what I know about the Promeris, it works very well for Demodex but be very careful about giving the treatmnet early, this is very strong stuff!

Do read up about facial pyoderma

or what I jokingly refer to as "teenage bulldog acne"...check the search option at the top of this webpage and you can read previous discussions regarding this. Its a common happening with young bulldogs and you may be seeing this instead of a recurrence of Mange. Mange can be detected by microscopic examination of a skin scraping, checking for actual mites, and the density of them in a given area...mange isn't always read correctly by a new bulldog owner, just looking at the skin. I mean no offense. Its just that some of us who have had dogs for many years, and especially those who work with Rescue, can quickly spot a Mange condition because of having dealt with it so frequently, and usually in a more severe outbreak which includes hair loss and open wounds.

Question?

What is Promeris 'top spot treatment'? Did you apply the Promeris on the back of the neck as directed or directly on the demodex spots?

Maybe the addtional red areas are a secondary infection (pyoderma). Is your dog on antibiotics?
