demodex mange, part 2...ellie mae and max

I have just learned that ellie mae and max have demodex mange. I took them in this morning to be spayed and nuetered. I called to check in and they told me. I was horrified and totally clueless to this. I thought the redness on their face was caused by the constant playing and face chewing they do to each other.
I just read the post below but am wondering....how long does it take normally to be rid of this.
I take them to regular vet visits and am wondering why this wasnt found sooner. They were there a month ago.

Thanks for any info.

I haven't been on here lately but I'm always glad to see a post from you about your babies...especially about Max! I'm always so happy to hear that he is doing well!!

I just wanted to let you know that Demodex almost goes hand-in-hand with Bullies...at least in my experience with my two girls who came from completely different backgrounds. I do believe 10000000% that they have very touchy immune systems until they are older.

I have read the comments about the immunizations and agree completely...the spay/nueter can also stress the immune system which makes the demodex more difficult to control.

When I was treating both of my girls with Ivermectin, I gave them DanActive Immunity every morning, as well. It is a drinkable yogurt with probiotics available in the dairy case. I gave my girls half a container of the drink each morning and also gave them a fish oil capsule 2-3 times a day. The fish oil is good for the immune system and skin...and helps with the itchies they get from the demodex mites. When Punkie got demodex the second time (after her spay), I added Fortiflora to regular yogurt each evening in addition to the DanActive and fish oil regimine. The vet was amazed that her demodex had vanished in only 3 weeks...and after two additional scrapings 4 weeks apart...still no demodex!! Chloe is 2 now and Punkie is a little over 1 and they are demodex free. When the immune system matures the demodex seems to stay at bay.

Barb, the information that all the other bulldoggers have given you is excellent...I just wanted to give you my 2 cents because I'm always happy to read about little Max!

Give both your kiddos a big ol' hug from me...and a kiss on the lips for Max.

The thick stuff they hate is likely the Ivermectin

It tastes terribly bitter, and that's why the rescue vet that the local rescue group uses sends home a sweet syrup along with the ivermectin (can purchase it from a pharmacy...its cherry syrup base that they use to mix cough medicine, etc.) and you draw up the measured amount of ivermectin into your syringe and then draw up an additional 1cc of syrup...so when you shoot it all into the dog's mouth, the syrup is the first thing to hit the tongue/tastebuds and the bitter taste is largely modified. happy.gif

Demodex takes 2 to 3 months to rectify...

You must be very consistant with the medication (Ivermectin) and don't stop giving it until there are 2 clean scrapings.

Did they still do the spay & neuter? If they did the demodex may get worse before it gets better due to the stress of the surgery.

They went ahead and did the surgeries. I picked them up this morning and they are as rowdy as before.LOL I love them. They gave me two medications for the mange.(im at work right now and dont remember the names) but the clear thick medication...they hate!
Anyway...i think it will be a long process clearing this up.

Thanks for everyone's input

You said they were at the vets 1 month ago was that for the last

Rabies shot??? It is MHO that we are giving too much in a short time to our dogs and their immune systems are being compromised thus the mites are taking over due to this. If the rabies shot could be held off a month or so just to let the immune system mature more I think that Demodex would not be so prevalent.

demodex.....

all dogs carry the demodex mite....it could be the heat...stress brings out the mite....hormones...all things play a role...it proably would never have been caught if they had not gone to the vet...most demodex will clear by it self after a week or two....

thanks Vickie

Or ya could go to your vet and they will weigh your dog, [and my vet], mixed up the same solution, and showed me on the needle how much to give. And how often to give it, and when to come back in. I'm not questioning anyones answer, but I'm not the most knowedgeable person on this subject, so I want the vets supervision. Others will have dealt with this before, and have more confidence in their dosing skills.

Scraping $20
Meds $15

And he let me look at the mites.

Good luck, I feel better seeing the answers on the board.

Start boosting their immune system

and i would get the directions from your vet for oral ivermectin per the weight of the dog. You should be able to get a bottle for about 50bucks that will treat them for the whole time, about 3 months of daily medication.

If you have a local feed store you can purchase the ivermectin from the store its injectable, however you give it oral. Taste awful so you mix with something good.

yes

They were ther for their rabies shot one month ago.

I feel a little better now. I just feel bad that I didnt know what it was. They play so vigorously that I just thought they were red in the face due to that.

I was talking with my vet about this a few weeks ago

and he agrees 100000% and i told him if he sees one of my puppies the owners have been told no shot until after 7 months, he said we can push that out to over a year!

We also went in to when the last rabies case was found in Washington State and where it was found. It's not around here much, and unless you live in the woods and let your dogs run wild, its not a big deal.
