demodex mange

I have read quite a bit about this topic, but haven't heard first hand from someone who's dog had recovered from a severe case. my girl Josie has some very harsh scar tissue on her back, but her hair is growing back in, her last scrape 2 weeks ago showed some larvae so she had another dip. probably 4 total now. she eats really well, and has alot of energy (more like a puppy than a recovering puppy mill mom). anyone want to chime in, the rescue group which i got her from has been great, but they have never had to deal with a case this severe either. thanks for any input you may have to offer. tamsen

thank you for all the info

she is getting her hair back, and her feet have improved significantly. she eats well and she will be spayed soon. she will have another scrape and she is getting the ivermectin as well. i have heard that a good covering with bag balm also helps because the ointment suffocates the mites/larvae. any input?

Re: Michelle

I know that. I have used Promeris & it works great. Sort of harsh the first day or two, but really knocks out the demodex!!

dips are no different than Promeris, same ingredient which is amitraz. Promeris is applied topically just as a dip is sponged on...maybe not as much and as messy but that is why Promeris works so well..

Just an FYI

Re: Part of the reason dips are still used is that they are quic

We generally use Ivermectin alone. Believe me, I do get that in rescue, we do try to keep the costs down and gets quick and efficient results. I just haven't seen them used in my area in the past few years that I have been in rescue. As long as the demodex resolves, that is what is important. happy.gif

Part of the reason dips are still used is that they are quicker

in gaining a response, and cheaper as well. Remember that rescues always have to look at the 'bottom line' in cost-terms as well as reducing the time in foster care as much as possible. Often the dips are used in conjunction with oral meds like Ivermectin, and the dips are still the AVMA-recommended treatment for demodectic mange.

Re: demodex mange

I have delt with demodex with rescues but have never used the dips. My vets doesn't use them any more. There are newer types of treatments such as Ivermectin and Promeris. Is there are reason why dips were the coarse of treatment? I hope your girl has clean skin scrapes soon. Have you tried virgin coconut oil either orally or topically? I found it helpful & soothing for the dry, balding patches.

Recovery does vary from dog to dog somewhat...

and if her fur is starting to grow back, that is a good sign. In some of the worst cases I've seen, the toes/feet have become so scarred, with skin stretched/swollen so badly that they never return to a 'normal' look. I've also had a bulldog whose skin was so stressed for such a period of time that it became 'leathery-looking' with little or no fur across the top of the back, even when the mites were gone...so if her feet/toes are responding well in addition to her trunk/body, those are positive signs for a good recovery. Being that she's a rescue, I presume she has or will be spayed, as you wouldn't want to breed a bitch who has had to overcome a severe Demodex mange condition. happy.gif
