cooper has demodex!!! (x post)

i'm so sad! i thought he just had a bug bite or sting on his cheek. it didn't look any better after a couple of days, so i took him to the vet today. poor guy! does anyone have any advise about what to do or not to do? i've never experienced this before so i'm clueless. she didn't give me ivermectin (which i heard about from the med board), instead she wants to try promeris, a topical tick & flea med that he would get in a week or so anyway. i normally use frontline anyway, but this one has an extra ingredient called amitraz that she says usually gets it under control. i have to take him back in 2 weeks. has anyone ever heard of this? she had to scrape his cheek so it's raw now. he looks miserable:( any advise would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

It turns out he doesn't have demodex...

I posted in Forum 1. I wasn't with my husband for the 1st visit, so I misunderstood. They had suspected demodex, but it turns out to be some other sort of skin infection, most likely fungal.

when was he diagnosed?

cooper's cheek looked better (not as irritated & red) the next day after putting the promeris on him. that was last friday the 22nd. it looks totally cleared up now, except for the bald spot where she scraped it. the skin looks normal, though. maybe, if ajax's doesn't clear up, you could ask your vet about promeris? it does have side effects-like any other drug, but cooper didn't have any except he was a little tired. you can google it if you're interested & then make your decision. i just thought of something-maybe it will take longer for ajax to kick it because he has a resp infection. people told me to build up his immune system to help get rid of it. so if ajax is already fighting an infection, he might not be able to kick the demodex as quickly. just a thought. let me know how he does! i have to go back to the vet in 1 1/2 weeks to get rechecked.

Re: cooper has demodex!!! (x post)

I'm sorry to hear he has demodex, but I am glad that you got a diagnosis and can get him treated. Ajax is still on the clavamox for his demodex & resp. infection and we haven't seen any improvement in the demodex. He goes back on Sat. morning for a follow up. I will post this weekend about what the vet says and the next step we will be taking to get him better!

May 19th...

I will definitely do some research on Promeris before our follow up appt. I would like to at least have some information about our options before going in. Thanks for the tip. Good point on the respiratory infection- that definitely could have something to do with it. I will keep my fingers crossed that the appt. goes well on Saturday and we are able to see some improvement soon!

thanks so much elaine!

i hope he doesn't get any secondary skin sores! i'm watching him very closely & not letting him scratch it. it actually looks better today. it's not so swollen. it just looks bad where the vet scraped it. i'm putting triple antibiotic ointment on it where it's bloody from the scraping. do you think that's ok? thanks again!

Re: cooper has demodex!!! (x post)

My pup had this around her eye when she was 5 months old. We just gave her some herb supplements in her food to boost her ammune system but I wanted to add a very important part, cut out any and all yeast from diet. If you can feed a raw diet that would be ideal. They feed on yeast, check ingredients of what you are feeding very carefully. HTH

Yes, ointment on his scrape is fine...

just be sure you cleanse it before you keep adding layers of medication...I don't like seeing dirt, etc. "trapped" between layers of an ointment. happy.gif

Some info on Amitraz (long reply)

This is an insecticide that is commonly used to treat mange and other insect infestations on other species as well. In its concentrated form, its diluted in a measured amount of water and the dog is "dipped" meaning that his entire body is wetted down thru the fur to the skin with the preparation. The "dipping" is usually repeated every 3 weeks after a scraping is done to determine if the mite infestation is gone (ie, bugs dead). Usually it takes more than one dipping to totally clear the dog. The dips are used when there are multiple outbreaks on the skin, or the area is quite large. From your description of Cooper's outbreak on his face, his is a light situation and you will be happy that you can avoid the whole dips and use the Promeris topically where directed. Ivermectin is another "insecticide" used to kill off the mites but it is given orally, usually from 3-4 weeks to 3-4 months again depending on the severity of the infestation and the dog's reaction to it. Some dogs are treated with a pill form of Ivermectin used for heartworm prevention, but that is considerably more costly than the Ivermectin itself given by syringe into the mouth daily.

As I think someone explained earlier, there is no shame in having your dog come down with mange. All dogs carry an amount of the mites on their body, and they are passed from dam to pups while they nurse. When a dog's immune system is compromised, either by illness, rapid-growth of pups, teething, multiple vaccinations at once, and other possible health issues, the mites can flourish and reproduce rapidly. They burrow into the hair follicles and the irritation they cause results in hair loss...this in turn itches and the dog scratches his skin, sometimes causing deep wounds which can become infected. The worst cases we see are from dogs coming out of the shelters or those whose owners are uncaring/clueless as to the need for treatment! Your dog, as I said earlier, was caught relatively early, I'm sure the vet is going to monitor the healing closely as you will be, and you shouldn't expect to see 'secondary skin sores' or infections. happy.gif If you have any questions, please ask us...many here have dealt with mange, in varying degrees and with a variety of medications/regimens. happy.gif

Promeris works good for demo just watch your dog for side effect

it makes them lethargic and not want to eat for the first 24 hrs or so. It has the same ingredient(mitaban maybe?) the vets office uses to dip dogs with demo.
