Chronic ear infections-could this be food allergies?

I posted earlier about my six year old spayed bully. She has had chronic ear infections since we got her from the breeder (questionable breeder) In the last six months she has lost quite a bit of weight. She has never been interested in food and always had a sensitive stomach and anything would give her gas. She was fine for years a on a strict high quality kibble only diet. Then she started with diarrhea and vomiting and always battling ear infections.

We have spent thousands on treating one ear infection after another. The antibiotics always make her vomit. She no sooner gets off them and within a few weeks, ear infections again. We do rinse her ears with ear optic to try to keep them clean a few times a week.

We have already tried most of the novel proteins from the pet stores; introducing them slowly. We recently started mixing her kibble with canned to attempt to get her to put on some weight. She is definitely underweight.

I would like to try a homemade food diet to see if we can clear up these issues on our own; spent too much at he vet lately. Any suggestions on a basic diet to start her on?

similar situation

We've recently been to a vet school dermatology clinic with our male who will be 4 this summer. He started with a bad ear infection/build up around Christmas and they have said that it is def. allergy related. He is currently on a strick fish/potato diet and we've tried lots and lots of meds. His ear canal is currently "opened up" due to the steroids he's been on and the vet wants to do a deep ear cleaning. This requires putting him under and needless to say, I am weary.
To answer your question, yes - it could either be food allergies OR environmental allergies. See a derm.happy.gif good luck!

get on a raw diet......

get rid of the grain food and any antibotics your on with any steriods.....to replace the steroids get some colloide silver....this will replace your antibotics....start on chiken if your weary of raw then put it under the broiler for 3 min no bone only boneless chicken breast...also boil some and give her the stock to pick up her appetitie.... i have gone thru it all with two rescues and my show boy who suffered with idc....the collide silver cleared all ear infections and the idc....what i spend on feeding raw to five dogs i save on hugh horrible vet bills....i do get lamb ribs and my vet cant understand how my 11 yo husky teeth stay so clean..along with the others....since starting raw i see the vet once a year for senior check up.....i also use no flea..or heartworm meds....they are chemicals that will kill your dogs immunity system... join raw chat and raw feeding.... their is a homopathy forum.....
if you can get to a holistic vet but make sure their holistic and not just saying that....some accupuncture will help with those chronic ears.....
i have been thru alot and now that my dogs are kibble and chemical free their happy and healthy....
also no more vaccines most of the problems you could be having is vaccine damage....
with nothing to lose try this route...it will take time to undue alot but you will never believe the difference in the life of your pet.....

Skip the vet and go straight to dermatologist

My boy's ears had become so bad the canals were closing. After trying different meds from different vets, I finally opted to go to a specialist. I would recommend getting an allergy blood test done. He was on prednisone and an antibiotic anti-bacterial anti yeast ear drop. I was to clean his ears every day with a cleanser that had a drying agent. I use K9 ear solutions. Really good stuff. Once they finally cleared I was instructed to clean ears 3x per week and use Zymox with cortisone. I feed him a grain free food. Taste of the Wild and Party Animal organic canned dog food. He is allergic to yeast, soy, flaxseed and barley,so I make sure these foods do not have those ingredients. Sometimes a specialist is needed. They are expensive, but they also cut to the chase because this is what they deal with on a daily basis. Good Luck,

Homemade diet for allergies

I recently posted a homemade diet for Bulldogs that was given to us by a Veterinary Dermatologist for our previous bulldog Rocky who had many allergies. We were instructed to mix 1 lb. of cooked ground pork with 2 1/2 lbs. cooked potatoes and feed twice daily (extra stored in frig). He was on this diet for his last four years. Did well and loved it.

Hello!

Ear cleaners are a controversial subject. If she has reoccuring ear infections, I would avoid the cleaners that you poor into her ear - they create a wet environment for bacteria to grow. Try using the ear cleaner on a qtip or cotton ball and clean the area that you can see.

I hope that you have done a culture on her ear to see what antiobiotic would be best. When we did this for my Tessie, we found out that no ear medications made for animals would work for her. Our doctor put her on a human ear antibiotic and it really knocked out the infection.

As far as food, How about trying a raw diet? You can get pre-made raw diet in different flavors at a variety of stores. Some of them have vitamins mixed in to be more of a "rounded" diet. If you would like to go this way... please let me know. I am switching my girl to raw in a couple weeks because we have horrible crystals in her urine that we can't get rid of. I have done a lot of research and can share it with you.
