Hello,
My little 4 month old boy has cherry eye. It's popped out twice before and worked it's way back in within an hour or two each time, but this time it appears to be out for good. I spoke to my vet yesterday and she recommended waiting until he his 6 months old for surgery so that while being anesthetized only once he can be neutered, have the cherry eye fixed, and also have his prolapsed urethra fixed (currently it's asymptomatic). So, I guess I have two questions:
1. How long is it safe to have the cherry eye exposed? It popped out yesterday and he will be 6 months on Oct. 21, which leaves almost a full 2 months until surgery. My vet said it would be fine as long as I put artificial tears in his eyes 3-4 times per day. I trust her, it's just that the cherry eye looks so red and unsightly!
2. I wasn't planning on having him neutered until closer to 1 year so that he can develop more fully (I know there are diverging opinions on this topic). Is it worth putting him under anesthesia twice (once for cherry eye and again for neuter/prolapsed urethra) so that I can give him more time to develop before neutering? Or, is the extra few months of development time before neutering not worth putting him under anesthesia twice?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: My puppy is 4 months and has Cherry eye
Yeah, the cherry eye being exposed freaks me out as well ... it just doesn't look like it's good for him. I also can't stand that everyone that see's him now is like "what's wrong with his eye?" I hate having to explain it over and over again .... it reminds me that he needs surgery : (
Any way, I appreciate your response .... it make me feel better that others are also getting advice from their vet that it's OK to leave it out and wait. Thanks again!

Re: Have you tried gently massaging it back in?
I've tried pushing back in a couple of times, but no luck yet. I'm going to keep trying. Thanks!

i agree.....
the surgery is so scary...i think thats why the cherry eye does not even bother me...the longer i have to wait the longer he does not have to go under....

My puppy is 4 months and has Cherry eye
My vet said she likes to wait until 9 months to do the cherry eye, said she likes the eye to be grown, she is going to do the cherry eye surgery where a pocket is made, both eyes need doing.
He also has a small umbilical hernia that needs fixing, I thought they would maybe do them all at the same time but she says she will do the ops at different times so he is not under for so long at once.
The cherry eye hanging out for so long freaks me out as does the thoughts of surgery

Have you tried gently massaging it back in?
I used to do that with our boy when his would pop out. I would just use the side edge of my thumb to gently push it in place. He had his out eventually since it wouldn't stay in for long.

Thanks for your response. I'm just curious, does your boy's eye look this bad (link to pic below)? Also, I noticed some green discharge from his eye this morning. Have you experienced that? I'm going to putting ointment in his eye as that has seemed to relieve it in the past. Thanks again!
