casper says lets talk raw (an update)

so casper (last known as cassie) she has gained 2 lbs...is no longer in diapers...as her bowels are nice and firm....she is pooping twice a day....
so she is off slipery elm...
i have her on about 25% bone to keep as firm as possible...
she is on 50% chicken and 50% lamb for the next two weeks....
i have added 5% beef heart to her diet and this is why the high bone as organs can cause loose stools....
with my fish i do salmon once a week fresh i do steam it....
i do a cod liver tab every day for my omegea...but with Casper i do every other day....being a sb firm stools are nessary and anything that could loosen them is a set back....
so her diet
25% bone
50% lamb 50% chicken
5% organs beef heart at this time time..... 1/2 cup salmon steamed on fridays....
no skin on the chicken....

jen would like other people to post their diets and what they feed i think that is great.....i feed very simple and basic meals....

will post some pictures next week.....

Heart is not considered an organ - that's a protein/meat

the typical recommendation is 80% protein, 10% bone and 10% organ which most sights I've read encourage 5% liver + 5% other organ (kidney, lung, pancreas, brain, eyeballs, spleen, genitals, etc.)

but, I am personally not familiar with SB so I'm sure you have a much better hand on things with respect to what is best for the dog

sb is....

spina bifida its a defect in the spinal cord...most sb dogs cannot control their bowels.... so dirrhea is a constant battle.... so this is why i use so much bone at this time...once she is constant in hard compact stools i will lessen my bone to where my two other boys are between 10 to 15 % bone...
i consider heart a organ becasue it has a function??? i may be wrong but my crew has to hard of a time digesting liver....and i myself love beef heart....i can dehydrate it for treats....feed it raw...its just a fun thing to have in my menu!!!
and i have a hard time finding other sources or organs i like.....

Yes, I am familar with the condition

just not as it would relate to feeding raw....

I mostly use chicken liver, it's cheap and I usually get it on sale, however I can't stand the slimmy texture, so I cook mine just a tiny bit to get the slim off!

- guess we all have our little hitches! LOL

raw feeding to me is a miracle with sb....

I see so many in diapers....its the grains in the food since the spincher muscle does not hold and the stomach empties out fast they have constant loose bowels...which leads into other problems....with casper she does have small hard poops during the day kind of like a rabbit...but their firm and hard... charlie is two now and only has two bowels a day....
does that make any sense??? no grains no sloppy poop !!!!!! and that makes me a happy people!!!!!
my vet just shakes his head he cant believe the difference in her in just 2 weeks....

so now do you use tripe in your diet ?

Yep - just introduced tripe this week

and they both LOVE it....they lick their dishes clean and then go over to each other's to check for more....could not believe it - I thought for sure with the smell Dixie would turn her nose up, but she can't seem to get enough! I'm glad - I hear it's so good for them!
