Bully - Vomiting in am - Bile

Hello all

I think I have this covered based upon other threads around similar behavior, however I still wanted to check with the experts of this site happy.gif

My bulldog has vomited first thing in the am 3-4 times over the past few weeks. She has never exhibited this behavior before. She has been eating more though since I switched her food (It's probably been a month now)

It's all bile (very yellowy)

Reading around it sounds like the most common reason would be her belly is empty, it does seem to be on days where she sleeps in longer so that would be logical. At least one time I know for a fact she was looking for food but it was so late we didn't give her any before bed.

My question is this, does that sound right and if so what have others done that helped - simply treats before bed? I don't think she'll eat additional dog food if I give it to her, I think I have to go the treat route. If you do treats how much are you talking seems to make the difference? Something small or much larger.

I feel so bad, she seems to be chewing cud or something and then vomits. I do have a vet visit scheduled for 2 weeks from now and will cover this with her then too, but wanted to get the boards advice.

Thanks and Happy President's Day

like the others

We give Tonka a little snack each night shortly before bedtime. Usually about 1/4 cup or so. If not, we can usually count on the bile in the morning.

what food are you feeding?

I have noticed my dog who was eating Canidae vomited bile in the AM if I didn't give her 1/2 cup of her kibble at bedtime.

evening snack will probably resolve the problem

Tiger has to have food out until bed and as soon as she wakes up

or else this becomes frequent. Now she naturally seems to eat late and it is a rare occurence. Good luck.

Info

Thanks for the info and insight.

I did just what as other suggested fed her last night, and no issues today. Although she wasn't doing it everyday, just has don't it 2-3 times in the last few weeks.

For the poster who asked why I switcher her food, I think she may have allergy to the food she was on so I wanted to try her on something else. She has been only on that food for a month roughly, and 2-3 times has only occurred in the last two weeks - so it is possible it's tied to the food and will keep it in mind.

I'll go over it with the vet though just to find out more.

In terms of Foam, it's not foam. She does foam at times, normally after she gets very active after eating a bunch or drinking a bunch. It's not all of the time but it does happen under those conditions. The vet had said her palette looked good in the past, but I'll have her check again.

she needs a little treat......

it does not to be a large ..meal just a little some thing to tide her over....a large dog biscuit would be good....also a tums before bed time will help with a acid stomach....

I tried...

a tea spoon of apple cider vinegar to her water before bed time. It lowers the ph in the dogs system. Also plain yougurt with food.

Yep, you guessed it.

This breed can develop an overabundance of stomach acid and many awaken with that yellowish foamy bile coughed up in the morning...its from an empty stomach combined with too much acid. There are a couple things you can do: Decide how much food she needs to maintain a healthy weight, and just divide that into 2 or 3 portions during the 24hrs, so if she gets 2&1/2 cups food daily give her 1 cup in AM, one cup at dinnertime, and 1/2 cup just before bed. She should be able to hold that much food (1/4 to 1/2 cup dry food or the equivalent in "cookies" such as one large Milkbone or Kirkland dogbone) without needing to poop during the night. Of course anytime you give 1/2cup of food or more, the dog should be allowed to drink water directly afterward to help 'digest' this food. You may want to take away the water an hour before bedtime, tho some dogs do well with holding urine overnight anyway.

Dogs who produce a lot of that acid/bile may also need a TUMS anti-acid tablet before each meal (not snack)but you've reported that she only has this problem upon awakening.

Try this for the next two weeks and you can then report to your vet what changes you have done, and how successful or not they have been...if unsuccessful, he/she may have other suggestions.

Try a (1) treat

late before bed to see if that helps.

Besure to have a discussion with your vet (hopefully bulldog experienced) about her palette to rule that out. Typically a palette problem is whit foamy bile...not yellow. So I suspect a troubled tummy.

Did you say you switched foods. Has this just started happening with the new food? Maybe the food isn't setting well with her, if so.
